“So, you think we’ll have the element of surprise,” I say.

“Exactly.” Doc hugs me tight. “And instead of us being divided, like he’s hoping, it’ll behisteam that’s divided. He’s probably already got a group headed up north to come at us again. While they’re busy tearing our mountain apart looking for you, we’ll be tearingtheirhome apart looking for Jud. And we’ll haveyou, which he definitely won’t be expecting. And you make us stronger.”

“We’re stronger together,” I clarify. “It’s not just me. It’s all of us. It’s our love.”

“Damn right. And with our new friends, we’re going to raze his stronghold to the ground. He thinks he can take from us? He thinks he can divide us? He has no idea the scope of the war he’s started.” Doc’s voice is lethal.

“He’s about to learn,” I say.

“He’s about to learn,” Doc agrees. “Come on,” he says as he rolls off the bed. “Let’s get you under the blankets.”

I let him cocoon me in his warm arms and the soft covers, and I think about the mission. The thought of our home being ransacked like Doc described leaves me cold inside. But if it means having fewer men to confront in New Orleans, it’ll be worth it.

Around a yawn, I say, “Even if Raptor sends some of his men north, there could still be more of them than us in New Orleans.”

“Rev and I figure around twenty.” Doc yawns, too. He’s worked hard today. All my guys have. Coming down from the yawn, he says, “Four of them died in that chopper crash, and they’ll send maybe six up north to look for you. That leaves twenty.”

“Still more than us,” I say, concerned, but not overly so. My guys are strong. And smart. And we have help.

“Yeah, but we’re the good guys.” Doc stretches out with a satisfied groan and tucks me tight against his side. “Good guys always win.”

We take our time snuggling beneath the covers. We cling to each other, and our legs tangle together. I love how warm he is, how good it feels to lie next to him, skin to skin.

“We’re going to get him back,” Doc promises.

“I know.” I put on a brave smile. “We’re going to crush this.”

“Damn right, sweetheart.” Doc kisses my forehead and, breathing in unison, we fall asleep.

Chapter 9

Cora

Six in the Billiard Room

My nights alonewith Grim and Doc were beyond special. Before we go to battle, I want special time like that with Shep, Brawn, Scrap, and Rev, but there’s only one night left.

“I can’t choose,” I say to Rev before dinner. I’ve pulled him aside in the common area as the others begin seating themselves at the dining table.

A look of confusion passes over his face. Then he notices the others around the huge table. He nods in understanding. His grin is sly and secretive. He wraps an arm around my waist and tugs me in so close his spicy, manly scent wafts over me.

His lips are at my ear now. “Why choose when you can have it all?”

I smile at his flirting, but his suggestion isn’t possible. “The bed upstairs is only queen sized,” I point out.

“Who says you need to spend the night in a bed?”

It’s my turn to look confused.

“Leave it to me,” he says, mysteriously, and he abandons me. His long legs take him to the dining area. It’s more crowded than last night, since Target and X-Ray are back. The dining table is full to capacity, and Stealth and Steel are sitting on barstools near the kitchen counter.

As the others take their seats, Sarge lowers his muscular frame into the chair at the head of the table.

Rev leans in and exchanges a few words with the leader of the soldiers. Then he holds out an arm to me in invitation.

I go to him, wondering what he’s up to.

He tucks me against his side possessively and stands tall. “Men of Eagle Peak,” he says, “After service tonight, the six of us and Cora will convene in the game room. Understood?”
