He looked around for a threat, only to see a splintered chair strewn across the floor.

Persephone’s back was to the door, taking deep breaths with her fists clenched at her sides. “Not the best time to have a discussion, Devon,” she growled, her voice rough with emotion.

Noticing the veins of black trying to claw up her arms, the thick smoke clouding the room, he slowly shut the door behind him and leaned against it. This was her breaking point and he would not leave her to navigate it alone.

“Leave,” she ordered. Her power saturated the surrounding air, and he felt a physical push from it as he crossed his arms and held his ground. He could feel her control slipping through their bond and the fear that she was losing command of her domain, and self, for the first time in her very long life was palpable.

“You didn’t let me fall apart alone, so I will not let you go this alone either.”

He felt wind pass over him, and in a split second, the Goddess of the Underworld was in his face. Horns a shiny onyx jutting from her head, her skin pearlescent, eyes completely black, a crown of Godfire, and wings of pure black feathers.

He simply looked her over before meeting her eyes.

“You’re beautiful,” he whispered, and she froze, her black eyes widening in shock.

He knew people most likely ran in fear from her in this form, but he found all her forms beautiful and unique in their beauty. This form radiated a power that called to his, strengthened it.

Fueled it.

She stumbled back from him, only to have him follow as his own God form took over. The crown of golden leaves; the vines that moved over his body like tattoos come to life; his serpent tattoo moving from across his neck to his back before going dormant again at the lack of threat; his entire body engulfed in green fire.

Nature and rebirth standing before death and darkness. Two opposites but balanced all the same.

“You put this all on yourself when it is bigger than just one being. You see that someone crossed into your home, and that as the guardian here, you’ve failed. I get it. I’ve carried my own guilt for far too long. I carried it until you made me release it into a field of dying and dead trees, only to have my power create a new forest and a new hope. So, if you think for one second you will scare me into walking away so you can dwell and destroy yourself, you are incredibly naïve.”

Her head tilted as her eyes lost the black, becoming the blue he loved just as much. He watched the horns disappear, and before she could do anything further, his hand was touching the feathers at her back.

“A fallen angel,” he whispered with a tiny smirk. “I get where the legends come from.”

His hand moved along the ridge of her silky wing as he took in the stunningly iridescent quality of her feathers.

“Beautiful,” he whispered again, then met her eyes. “Just so damn beautiful.”

Before he knew what he was doing, his hands moved from her wings to her jaw. He cupped her face as he took her mouth.

This was not the slow passion he had felt the other times when they had lost themselves in each other. While he was reverent in his touch, she was punishing.

Her mouth crashed against his, teeth clashing as she took from him what she needed. While he gave her all that he had to give.

She ripped his shirt, the buttons scattering across the floor as she discarded the fabric without a care. Pushing his pants down, she turned them towards the bed and gave Devon a shove. He landed on his back, pants around his ankles as she climbed atop him, joining their bodies, her wings flaring out behind her.

The sight she made was unbelievable. His angel. His Goddess. She was the most gorgeous creature he had ever seen.

It was almost more than he could take, and had he been mortal, he would have surely died from such a vision. Such bliss.

“Persephone,” he murmured, his hand moving up to cup her cheek. Her eyes opened and the bright blue Godfire lit the surrounding room.

He was not with Persephone right now, but the Goddess of the Underworld. The same person, yet not. Deep inside he knew this was the real her in that moment. One she was scared to show anyone yet trusted him enough to love him in this form.

He felt honored.

He felt…

“Fuck,” he felt his climax hit in a rush and roll through him. He lost himself, felt her pull his body against hers as she arched into him, chest heaving while she found her release before giving him another punishing kiss.

Behind his eyelids he could see the green Godfire as it lit the room up, his power flooding and bending around hers.

Pulling her lips away, she gasped.
