“Fuck you!” he yelled and everything around him went silent.

The roar of the water had stopped, causing him to open his eyes, and he almost fell backwards at the sight.

The water had paused, frozen in the air as if something held it in place. As if it had hit a wall.

Yet, that was not the most terrifying part. What both scared and confused him in that moment was that West could feel the water. Could feel it pushing, wanting and pleading, to get past him.

The shock of it made West lose his grip for a moment and the water pushed forward a foot.

Using his very unnerving connection to it, he mentally pushed at the wall and watched as the water rippled out from him.

Gathering all his reserves, he gave a huge mental shove at it. The water lost its height as it started to flow backwards, finally receding back to the sea, leaving a bewildered and terrified West in its wake.

He could still feel the water as it moved over buildings, roads, and the docks before it was finally back safely in the Thalassian sea.

A contentment washing over him that wasn’t his.

“How…?” he heard from behind him.

He spun around to face the person who put a voice to his thoughts.

A woman with long auburn hair and aqua eyes stood in shock, looking between him and the receding water.

West dropped his hands in exhaustion as a headache began to form behind his eyes.

“I have no fucking idea.”

Devon woke up to the smell of smoke permeating the air as he tried to open his swollen eyes. His body so incredibly sore that it made him think he had been in an accident.

“I’m so sorry, Devon. I wish I were whole enough to stop this,” a voice whispered as he felt a hand lightly touch his hair.

Ow. Even his hair hurt.

“Who are you?” Devon asked without moving, his words sluggish, still fighting to open his eyes.

“Sadly, I am a good reason you are in this mess, and for that I am sincerely sorry. However, I am not so sorry that I would change it. My sister has a great need of you. Though she is strong, she is not infallible.”

Devon finally peeled his eyes open and pushed up onto his elbows as he looked up at the woman who sat next to him. A torch that had been lit, with the pointed end of it pushed into the earth near him, illuminated her face.

The woman in front of him was petite, light brown eyes, and auburn hair. Though she did not share in the coloring of her sisters, her features told him all he needed to know about her identity.

He had a pretty strong suspicion he knew who she was.

“Demeter?” his voice weak, barely above a whisper.

Demeter gave him a warm and loving smile.

“How?” he asked, using what little strength he had to push himself up into a seated position as Demeter let out a little laugh, her eyes holding only kindness.

“You hold my power and though I no longer wield it, it still calls to me. Alas, what you see is my soul. Mortal as it is.” Demeter tilted her head to him as if silently contemplating something.

He could only raise his eyebrows in response.

“This world never made sense to me,” Demeter continued, looking out at the trees of his forest. “A father who was supposed to care and protect his children kills them. Innocents are killed while evil walks away unscathed. People are left behind to grieve those who’ve died. I’ve seen all this from life and behind the gates, but only one thing rang true, when the souls made it to her, my sister balanced it all out. The innocents were given a freedom mortality never held and evil was punished. I watched her make sure the souls had what they needed or received the justice that the universe cried out for. Along the way, I watched my sister losing her own sense of balance, only finding it in the small moments she was near you.”

He listened as Demeter explain something he already knew, but from a different perspective.
