“You are a man now and a man needs a space of his own.”

“I have my room, Dad,” Devon interrupted.

“Yes, yes. You do, but it is not truly yours. You haven’t made it your own yet. Not as a man.

Just as a child.”

Before Devon could argue, his father threw open the door to his room.

Devon slowly walked in, dropping his school bag on the floor as he took in what his father had done. He had created a whole new sanctuary for Devon.

A bed and desk made of oak, a plaid comforter Devon had eyed in the market, and a new shelf that boasted several mementos from their adventures together.

A smile crossed Devon’s face before he turned and threw his arms around his father in a rib

crushing hug.

“Thanks, Dad,” Devon whispered to his father, knowing he had built this all by hand. It explained some of the missed dinners, the hours his father spent holed up in his workshop.

His father cleared his throat, rubbing Devon’s back a moment before he broke away. His father was not one for overt affection but did his best when it came to his son.

“I do expect good grades and good choices to be made here.”

Devon resisted rolling his eyes.

“Don’t worry, Dad. Study only, no girls. Got it.” Devon couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled

out. His father stood with his hands on his hips, shaking his head.

“Get used to your room. It is your turn, but I’ll make dinner.” His stoic father left the room,

closing the door gently as he left.

Devon looked around his room in awe before throwing his arms out to the side and letting himself fall backwards onto his new bed.

Heavenly.

Chapter 8

When Persephone shadow jumped into Devon’s chambers the next morning, she stumbled backwards against a sudden force. Devon seethed above her, his forearm pressing her chest. Their eyes clashed, and the panic vanished from his green irises.

Devon took a sharp step back. “What the fuck was that? You just magically appear without knocking?”

Persephone straightened and smoothed a hand over her chest. Those green eyes had been

so… close, sparking with anger.

“Usually, yes,” she said.

Devon frowned. “Well, for future reference, don’t do that with me.”

Persephone nodded. She had to remember that humans now had attachments to their privacy.

It was only a few millennia ago that her sister Hera had a habit of light jumping into mortals’ homes in the form of animals. Messy business, that was.

“What I did, it’s calling up a portal to move between spaces in the same timeframe. Creatures of shadows, like myself and Thanatos, call it a shadow jump,” she explained. “My sisters are creatures of power from earth and life, so they call theirs light jumps. You will learn how to do this in time, but you will first need to know how not to end up in random places. If it is a soul that is ready to depart, you will naturally feel the pull. However, when you are not dealing with a soul, it is more difficult. You will need to know the place you are going, as detailed as possible, or have some form of a connection to the person if shadow jumping to find someone.”

“So, that’s how I’ll move around as a Reaper?” he asked. “Teleportation.”
