Hecate returned her smile and arched an eyebrow.

“You question my sleuth skills, my Goddess? I’ll have you know that Thanatos and I keep a very, very close eye on anything Underworld related. As I mentioned when Devon first ate the seeds, I knew his soul was the one that called to yours.”

“Touché.” Persephone clinked her teacup against Hecate’s. Hecate was in fact able to bring

information to Persephone that seemed impossible to know otherwise.

“Yes.” Persephone placed her teacup down on the lemon-yellow tablecloth. “Let’s figure out exactly what their little game is.”

Hecate paused for a moment, obviously reworking her thoughts on how to tell Persephone something she most likely did not want to hear.

“From what I can sense, and what I can see with my eyes, you two were meant for a path that ends with you together. A soul does not call to another for the simple pleasure of hearing it speak. It calls because the soul sings to it, calls to them, and finds a home in their embrace.”

Shadows swirled around the room, covering them in darkness before Thanatos appeared in front of them, blocking the heat of the fire.

“Yet another girls’ night where you failed to invite me,” he stated with his hands on his hips. “Your invitation was lost in the mail,” Hecate replied with a saccharine smile.

“Yes, just like all the other invitations over the past hundred years. You two are starting to give a guy a complex,” he asserted before moving to sit in one of the empty chairs at the table. “I was eavesdropping at the door just now,” Thanatos started.

“Of course, you were.” Hecate interrupted, rolling her eyes.

“And I can keep an ear to the ground, too. Help out moonlight over here.” He moved his hand in reference to Hecate. “Gotta say though, the man, regardless of why he is here, is tossing all your hormones around like glitter. You’re busy trying to figure out how to deal with him and the feelings he’s giving you in your nether regions. Not something I saw coming.”

Both Hecate and Persephone stared at him, their eyes wide. Throwing his arm around the back

of Persephone’s chair, Thanatos crossed his ankle at his knee, the picture of male masculinity.

“You wonder why the invites are consistently lost, huh?” Hecate murmured, taking a sip of her tea.

“Yes, we will address that later.” He played with the ends of Persephone’s hair. “My point is, you’ve never been bound to anyone in such a way as this, and you are in new territory. I’ve yet to connect with a soul in such a way, and I imagine I’d be scared out of my mind. But I wouldn’t walk away. This is something precious, and I think a nice chat between you two will help illuminate how incredibly astute I am on this subject.”

“For one second there, I considered apologizing for never inviting you, but the end of your

inspirational speech reminded me of why.” Hecate let out a little sigh.

“I knew it.” Thanatos shook his head, his hands going over his heart. “Well, ladies, a soul calls to me.” He stood and turned his back to them as the black robe moved over his shirt and jeans and his body went skeletal. “Should you need further assistance and wisdom, I am but a shadow jump away.” His shadows moved around him quickly before he disappeared.

“He was surprisingly more obnoxious before you came around.” Hecate squeezed Persephone’s arm. “And not in the cute and lovable way he is now. Whether you like it or not, my friend, you bring out the good in people. This you will do for Devon as well. Mark my words.”

Chapter 12

Devon found himself summoned to Thanatos residence for training. By summoned, he meant that Thanatos shadow jumped him as he was taking his first bite of breakfast.

He landed in a heap on the floor of what looked like a dojo and jumped back up, still holding his fork full of eggs.

“Welcome to Apparition Station! Reaper Manor! Death…”

“Damn it, Thanatos! I was eating!” Devon yelled at the showboat of a Reaper as he threw his fork at him. Thanatos only laughed as the fork disappeared into shadows before it could reach him.

“I’ve let you play around the castle and cry in the road enough.” Devon raised his eyebrows at Thanatos when the specter of Death admitted to watching him.

“But,” Thanatos continued, “now it is time to work. I want to see what the new Reaper is made of!”

The smirking Thanatos rubbed his hands together.

“Man, you’re an asshole,” Devon muttered under his breath.

Thanatos started to bounce on the balls of his feet like a boxer readying himself for a fight.
