Devon was quick. “Ah, yes,” he stated blandly. “Busy guiding souls, grabbing coffee, and torturing me with your presence. I bet your days are packed to the brim.” His voice was cold and formal. She had to admit, she was a little impressed by Devon’s handling of Thanatos. It usually took people a few decades to navigate the Reaper’s mercurial personality.

Thanatos laughed, then walked over to clap Devon on the back, promptly ignoring Devon’s

slight flinch.

“What has our Dove gotten you into today?” Thanatos asked.

Devon stepped back and Persephone stiffened, surprised by the pang of emptiness she felt almost immediately

The Moirai said that he would balance her… was her reaction to the distance between her and Devon also the old biddies pushing them together? She couldn’t deny how she’s been drawn to her warrior over the centuries, but this iteration, Devon, had only stopped looking at her with resentment that morning.

“Persephone,” he growled to Thanatos, catching both of them off guard. “Her name is Persephone.”

She wasn’t sure why she didn’t tell Devon that Thanatos only used that term to get under her skin, but she found herself intrigued by his reaction. She guessed she wanted to know how Devon was feeling too, and though she knew it was wrong, she hoped Thanatos’ little game gave her something to work with in terms of his odd behavior. She’d seen billions of mortal souls, but the humans still fascinated and puzzled her. Especially this one.

“And she chose me to be her personal security,” he added, edging closer to her.

An interested gleam shone in the Reaper’s eyes.

Oh, he was enjoying this way too much.

“Ah, you’re the new bodyguard to keep our Goddess healthy and hale. Good. You and I both will be with her all day long so I can go over both your mortal job and your Underworld job while we are here.” He looked at Persephone to confirm, but she shook her head. Thanatos’ head tilted in silent question.

Should she even try sending him out with Thanatos to collect a soul just so he understood the process? Would they find out what exactly his powers were by doing so? Or would that be too dangerous?

She remembered Devon’s negative reaction the first time she indicated he may become a

Reaper, and her stomach sank.

“Actually,” Persephone replied. “I need to speak with you about that, Thanatos.”

Thanatos nodded, a question mark still stamped over his features, and stepped towards Cerberus Financials’ entrance. With that, the games were over and the business of the day was back on. Thanatos opened the front door for her and Devon trailed in her wake, keeping a close eye on the Reaper.

Sighing, Persephone feared she might suffocate with these two-flinging testosterone at each other all day.

Chapter 14

Devon stood to the side of the conference room beside the door, arms folded as he watched Persephone speak to a group of clients. He’d nicknamed them in boredom.

Grumpy, Lumpy, Dumpy, and Pervy. Not the most creative names but fitting in his observations. All of them older and graying, but Grumpy distinguished himself by communicating only through grunts and eye rolls. Lumpy was extremely overweight, his flesh attempting to escape the tight, untailored clothes. Dumpy, sitting insignificantly in the corner taking notes, looked like he hadn’t met a shower or washing machine in months.

Pervy was the one that Devon kept his eyes on. The one holding his attention most, as his behavior agitated that strange place deep inside of Devon that saw Persephone as his.

The part of him he was trying his best to ignore these days.

Pervy seemed not to notice Devon watching him as he stared at Persephone. Pervy’s beady eyes tracked her chest as she leaned forward to jot something down or her ass as she walked over to present something. He knew Pervy was visualizing her completely naked, and Devon found himself holding back growls he didn’t even know he could make.

However, he had managed to rid Pervy of some self-confidence when he caught Devon’s eye and shrank back from Devon’s glare.

Persephone was amazing, in that she radiated power and authority, and loathe as he was to admit it, he could understand a tiny bit of Pervy’s fascination. He just hoped he was a lot more discreet about it.

He wasn’t sure how Thanatos tolerated these meetings. Thanatos just sat quietly at the other end of the table. His focus mostly trained on Persephone. Occasionally, the Reaper’s dark stare would settle on Devon.

Curious.

Probing.

The playful man gone.
