Thanatos stood, drawing Devon and Persephone’s attention.

“Do you have anything else planned at Cerberus today?” he asked Persephone, his tone serious.

Persephone looked slightly bewildered before answering, “No.”

“Good.” Thanatos nodded. “We’re going to train.”

Persephone started towards the door. “Excellent. I’ll finalize some things while you-”

“You’ll be joining us,” Thanatos interrupted.

Persephone halted.

“If you don’t mind,” Thanatos added with a smile.

“Why?” Devon interjected. His instincts stirred. The Reaper was up to something.

“Our Goddess here can help facilitate your magic,” Thanatos answered. “And it was her seeds that gave you power and immortality to begin with,” he added, “so it stands to reason that your magic will respond to her presence.

“He’s right,” Persephone agreed. “It’s worth a try.”

Devon couldn’t tell her no, say that he didn’t want Persephone there to see him struggle.

“Alright then,” he agreed.

Persephone nodded and raised her eyebrows at Thanatos. “The basement?”

Devon straightened. “What’s in the basement?”

“There’s a warded floor below ground, known only to the immortals who pass through the tower,” Thanatos said. “We can train there without causing any disruptions.”

Devon’s back burned from the force of Thanatos’ stare. He wondered how honest he was

being with himself regarding the Goddess.

It seemed as if Thanatos already knew that answer.

Chapter 15

Using her access card, Persephone pushed the button for the basement, the men at her back. She could feel the tension rolling off Devon, and the smugness saturating the air from Thanatos.

What was Thanatos up to now?

The ding of the elevator and the doors opening up to the basement pushed her out of her thoughts and into the cement room. It held just that, cement walls and floors, some fluorescent lighting. Nothing else.

It was a place to put people having issues containing their power… or those who refused to even try in the first place. It was the perfect place to try out Devon’s powers. Thanatos was correct in that regard.

She stepped aside for the men to pass. She was unsure of what she would be doing, having never trained a Reaper herself. Thanatos was around before she took over the Underworld.

Devon moved to the center of the room and Thanatos moved next to her, running his arm across her back and around her waist.

Surprised at Thanatos’ action, she looked up at the man, who simply winked at her.

She cut her eyes to Devon, who watched Thanatos like a hawk. His eyes were locked on the hand at Persephone’s side. She tried to not roll her eyes. Thanatos had unusual methods for training.

“What? No punch for me today?” Devon asked, his eyes now narrowed at Thanatos. She could
