Hecate gasped and jumped up from Thanatos’ side. Her hand went over her mouth as she crept closer to Devon, staring at him like he was a new, unknown creature.

“Are you certain?” Hecate whispered behind her hand. “There is no way in fates that is

possible—”

Devon shot up from the couch with a hoarse shout, his chest heaving with exertion and his face sweaty as if he had just run a marathon. Something that was not the reaction an immortal would have when running. No, this was different.

“What happened?” he yelled. His panicked eyes flew to each person in the room until he

settled on Persephone. She knelt next to him and carefully grasped his hands in hers.

“Good news, I do not believe you are a Reaper after all,” she murmured. She attempted to smile, but it felt stiff. Devon’s expression dropped from panic to confusion. She ran her hands over his, trying to think of what to say, of how to explain it all.

Thunder rolled in the Underworld and Persephone stilled.

“Oh, no,” Thanatos groaned from across the room.

Persephone looked up and clashed gazes with Hecate. Her silver eyes rounded.

Devon squirmed beside her. “What’s wrong?”

Another peal of thunder rumbled through the realm. Thunder in the Underworld only meant one thing.

“My sisters are here.”

Chapter 16

Devon stood from the couch with everyone else in the room. He was unsure what was happening, but reading the room told him it was most likely not going to be a fun treat for surviving Thanatos’ training.

A Reevka opened the double doors to the study and a beautiful woman with golden blonde hair walked in wearing a white pantsuit and gold jewelry. She was followed by a no less beautiful woman with long auburn hair and turquoise eyes, wearing a flowery sun dress and sandals.

The air shifted, tensed.

Electricity moved violently over the blonde woman’s clenched fist. Both of the women stared at Devon, one with anger and one with curiosity.

“Hera. Amphitrite.” Persephone stepped between her sisters and Devon. This only made the blonde woman’s eyes narrow further. Devon was pretty sure Persephone had just painted an even bigger target on him with that action.

He sidled closer to Persephone. Catching Thanatos’ eyes, he caught a look of respect on the Reaper’s face.

That did nothing to help ease Devon’s anxiety.

“This is Devon, we were just finishing Reaper training—”

“He is no Reaper,” the blonde woman stated, cutting off Persephone as she strode even closer, stopping just a step away from him. She assessed him keenly, her eyes glowing pure gold.

“We were under the impression he was, Hera,” Persephone growled at her sister. Whisps of

her shadows flicked around her in warning.

“Well,” Hera looked from Persephone to him. “What impression do you have now? Would you like me to tell you what I felt, dear sister?”

Hera’s head tilted, her eyes taking in every inch of his face. Uncertainty twisted in Devon’s chest. All he knew was that he needed to keep Persephone safe, even from her own sisters as Hera paced around them with slow, predatory steps, looking them up and down. She paused in front of Persephone, hovering close to her shoulder.

A look of discomfort crossed Persephone’s face.

“Get out of my head, Hera,” Persephone demanded roughly, rounding on her sister. Hera stopped her examination and, from the relief on Persephone’s face, delving into Persephone’s head as well.

Everyone stood with bated breath, silently waiting on what this powerful woman in front of them would do. What she knew.
