Had everything he knew from his old life been a lie? What was real and how did Sasha work into all this? Had she seen West? Was West human?

The room had been too crowded for Devon to feel anything from him.

He pinched the bridge of his nose with his thumb and forefinger to ward off the headache from the growing questions.

“I was picking up something powerful, but I thought it was just her. What happened to you,

Devon?” she asked as she moved to him.

Petite but deadly, that was always how he had seen Sasha. They had an on-again, off-again fling while he stayed at one of his safe houses between missions. It was never more than that.

Merely two people who found comfort in each other for a brief period of time. He had, at one point, thought she was a friend. Obviously, he really didn’t know what a friend was since every person he had ever known aside from his father had lied to him.

“What are you, Sasha?” he asked, not ready to delve into his own death and explain how he

had no idea what was happening to him. That was a vulnerability he was not going to share.

Especially not with someone who did not trust him enough to share her own secrets.

“I’m sorry, Devon. I never meant to mislead you. Please know it was not something I kept from you for any other reason than I wanted to know what it was to feel human,” she whispered, her eyes pleading with him to understand. “After my father went to the deep sleep, and my brother took over, I saw an opportunity to live among the humans. I went to a remote place and got a job, lived among humans who did not know who I was or what I could do. It was… nice.”

He could only stare at her and wonder what she was even doing here. He was sure she read it all in his eyes because she sighed and looked out over the demolished grounds.

“Wow. You did all that?” She laughed a little, but the humor seemed artificial and forced.

She shook her head and sighed as she turned to face him. She ran her hands up and down her arms in a nervous gesture he had never seen before. When they met, she had a confidence that drew him in, a way about her that told the world they had to accept who she was because she would never apologize for it.

Standing in front of him was a totally different woman. A stranger to him now.

“My name is not Sasha. That is a name I used because it sounded more human. My real name is Minthe.” He could see how much she needed him to accept what she was saying. To forgive her for her lie.

“I am a Naiad, or River Nymph. My brother, the one you ran off, is Tristan the demigod of the River Cocytus.”

Devon stared at her a moment as pieces fell into place.

“In the Underworld? That river Cocytus?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. She only

nodded in reply, looking out into the garden at the damage he had caused to avoid his gaze.

What were the odds that his ex-lover would be the sister to Persephone’s ex-lover? The man who had pushed him to the point of destroying the building he was currently in.

He would laugh if he wasn’t about to pass out from emotional and physical overload.

“Wow. Okay,” he muttered as he ran his hand through his hair. This was apparently his new

daily routine, being confused and out of sorts.

“Are you…” Sasha, or Minthe now he supposed, watched him a moment before she continued. “Are you and the Goddess in a relationship?”

He widened his eyes in shock at her question.

She just confessed to lying to him and now had the audacity to question him?

Her eyes held hope, that maybe he wasn’t and perhaps Minthe could have another chance at him. Have him back as they had once been. Lovers who took comfort in each other’s bodies when the nights were long and lonely.

He shook his head at her.

“Not really seeing how that is any of your business, Minthe.” He couldn’t help the sneer that
