“When I was in my Goddess form, were you scared?” she asked and he could see how much

this mattered to her.

“Persephone,” he murmured, his face going into her hair as he pulled her into a hug. The scent of her vanilla and pomegranate shampoo tugged at memories he couldn’t reach. The scent matching her power as it encompassed his whole self and sang to his soul.

After a moment, she returned the hug and placed her head on his chest.

“Not even a little bit. You were…” he was about to say beautiful but thought she might find

that weird.

“Amazing,” he finally whispered.

They remained silent for a moment, both listening to each other’s breathing and allowing

themselves this temporary peace before going out to face the world again.

“Thank you. I needed this… cuddle buddy,” she whispered, snuggling deeper into him. “I’ve never had a cuddle buddy before.”

“Glad I’m your first,” he joked as he moved them into a comfortable position, her head on his chest as he leaned back a bit more.

Devon was pulled tighter against her.

He knew he was going down a rabbit hole, but hell if he wanted to stop himself.

“Can I stay a while longer?” she whispered into the dark.

“Always,” he whispered back as he tightened his hold around her.

He did not remember falling into a deep, dreamless sleep as they held each other. The nightmares held at bay for one more night.

***

Devon woke up on the couch covered in a blanket with no Goddess to be found. He shouldn’t have been surprised. She was probably walking out the door to check on the realm before the sleep was out of her eyes each morning.

He ran his hands over his face as he stood, the blanket falling to the floor. His jaw was already covered in stubble and his hair stuck up on the right side where his head had been crammed against the arm of the couch. He threw on a shirt as he left his room and padded down the stairs to the dining hall.

No one was there, but breakfast was already out, as it was every morning. Plenty of everything, from eggs benedict to pastries from around the human world.

He caught sight of Hecate as she walked past the door. He grabbed a croissant from the table as he jogged to catch up to her. Coming up beside her, a Reevka appeared and handed him his coffee.

He nodded a thanks as he stuck the croissant in his mouth and grabbed the coffee with one hand, and the other hand grabbed Hecate’s arm to stop her.

“What’s going on?” he asked after releasing her to grab hold of his pastry.

She had been moving through the hallway with her eyes pure silver, obviously doing something to help with regard to last night.

“Checking wards,” she stated as her eyes twirled with the silver mercury.

After a moment, she shook her head, her eyes returning to normal — as normal as silver irises could be.

“Sorry, sometimes I get caught up in the magic flow and I lose myself. The wards are all up and sturdy around the castle, so there should be no issues here. The gates were down though, large tears through the veil which concerns me as they were not near where the beasts had been.”

“Persephone knows?” he asked as he swallowed a bite of the pastry he had taken while she

spoke.

Hecate sighed and nodded.
