Bryn stepped forward, stabbing several wraiths moving in on her in her distraction, leaving them as nothing more than dust motes. Bryn walked to another gathering of humans not hiding behind glass. Mallory was among them.

Standing before them, her eyes moved through the crowd until they met Mallory’s. She trembled in fear, and the Morrigan aspect of herself let Bryn taste Mallory’s terror as it saturated the air around them.

“Your god is dead. I am real. You chose poorly.” Bryn looked right at Mallory as she said this.

Bryn turned back to where the battle was almost at its conclusion. There were very few wraiths left to fight as their maimed bodies reconstructed themselves enough to hold a sword once again. Bryn yelled out her battle cry as the last of the wraiths focused on her as if she were a beacon of light to their unholy darkness.

Senan was running through, stomping and hitting them, the crows dive-bombing them, and her shadow wolves were actually able to bite the wraiths since they were not of this world either. She watched her beloved pack tearing at the flesh of the monsters.

Her silver wolf was not among them, but the wraiths were not letting Bryn focus on that.

“In honor of the Tuatha Dé Danann,” she growled as she raised her sword once more and ran through the last of the wraiths, beheading them as she went.

No matter what it took, she would finish what King Bres had started.

Chapter 49

Theairstilledasif the world was aware that Bryn was coming back to herself and worried one wrong move might set her back on the warpath.

Standing in the middle of the bloody chaos, she raised her arms to the sky, holding her bloody weapons as if an offering to the heavens.

The crows dove down and aimed their bodies at her.

Instead of impact, they became one with her, the crows being made of her own power. A piece of the puzzle that was all her, the soul of the Morrigan, firmly in place.

The black wolf limped toward her, and Bryn wondered how a creature of her power could be injured as well, but as the wolf merged into her as the crows had, she noticed the bloody injury of her own leg.

Bryn was as much the wolf as the wolf was her.

“Queen of Shifters as well. You have a lot of names,”Cyerra said from somewhere, and Bryn felt relief that the sarcastic crow had survived to annoy Bryn another day.

Her eyes moved over the bodies lying strewn throughout the street. Her other self, as she saw it, would need to move the souls over to Faerie or watch as Arawn’s hounds took them to wherever the damned souls went.

The stake had withstood the battle, and the irony that those who would have burned her at the stake were the ones to die this day was not lost on her.

The girl who was scared of blood was covered in it.

“Come back, Bryn,” Danu whispered from behind her, but Bryn could only focus on the viscous fluid running down her weapons and her body.

The blue tattoos were still on her arms, but they no longer glowed.

Looking at the people cowering in fear, huddled together in front of her, she thought she would enjoy this. The feeling of having power over the people that hurt her, but she didn’t. She only felt...

Numb.

She wished she could explain that it wasn’t her, but it had been. She had allowed it, letting her mind go dormant for the Morrigan to rise up from within her and take her pound of flesh.

Bryn’s eyes made it to one woman in the crowd in particular. Ava. The woman who until this day had been a nuisance in pretty dresses. Always put together and out stealing boyfriends she thought more worthy of her than the women the men were already with.

This was not the Ava of yesterday. She was covered in dirt, bloody mud caked to her boots and the bottom of her dress. Her eyes were wild and her hair in disarray, and Bryn wondered then how she could have let this woman make her feel less than.

When it all hit the fan, Bryn was the one standing between the town and certain death, while Ava cowered.

If a man like Declan wanted a woman like her, he was well and truly not for Bryn.

Funny, Bryn thought, how my mind wanders to such ridiculous things while I am absolutely sure I am about to have an actual nervous breakdown.

A hand landed on her shoulder, making Bryn jump from her musings.
