Still.

I’m broke, remember?

Beggars can’t be choosers.

“Should I give him a call back, Rav?” I’m a few thousand bucks short of the new computer I need, not to mention: rent, food, utilities.

I need a computer desperately, the one I have is old, outdated, and every so often shuts down on me while I’m in the middle of designing something.

Ravioli blinks which is all the confirmation I need.

“Okay fine, I’ll call him back. The least I can do is see what he wants.”

Perfectly rational.

If Decker is the kind of guy that can cough up the same dough that Palmer did, I’ll be closer to my goal and better off for it.

I hit CALL BACK and listen while the phone rings.

It rings.

And rings.

And just when I’m expecting the outgoing voice message to kick on, a male voice answers.

“Decker Dunham speaking.”

Decker Dunham?

Stop it.

The voice on the other end of the line is masculine and rich. Hesitant—almost as if he were uncertain he answered his cell on purpose.

“Decker?” I repeat the name like an idiot, unsure of what else to say.

He clears his throat. “This is he.”

“Hi Decker, this is Miriam Bennington. You called and left a message?”

I say no more.

He is the one who cold called me, not the other way around.

“Oh! Yes. Yes, sorry, I’m—hold on for one second, would you? I have to close my office door.”

“Sure.”

Bubbles float around my body, slowly bursting and dissipating the longer I linger here.

I sip my wine; it’s a grocery store vintage I’d found on the endcap and taken three bottles of; I’m not one to balk at inexpensive alcoholic grapes.

I am good and buzzed…

“I’m back.” He says, the sound of a desk chair squeaking in the background. “Thanks for returning my call.”

“Of course.” I stare down my body at the bubbles covering my boobs, the cold air from the bathroom causing my nipples to go hard. “You mentioned being a friend of Palmer’s? I figured it couldn’t hurt to call you back.”

“Did I say friend?” He amends, clearing his throat. “I meant we work together at the same law firm. Collogues?” He babbles. “He gave me your number after cornering me in the supply room when I was grabbing loose leaf paper.” Decker chuckles as if that were an amusing fun fact. “After you worked his grandfather’s funeral earlier today.”
