“I’ll see you in bed.”

I shower in record time, feeling the weight of the last few days finally leave me as I scrub at my skin. When I’m done and dried off, I walk through to the bedroom to find Zoey under the covers, lying in the middle of the huge king size bed in her room.

“You know, I wasn’t joking before, maybe we really should move in here. This place is amazing.”

Zoey laughs, throwing back the covers. “Shut up and get in here.”

Laughing, I climb into bed, pulling her into my arms, relishing the feel of her body against mine again. It’s only been two nights, but it feels like fucking forever.

“God, I missed you,” I whisper, brushing her hair back as I press a kiss to her forehead.

Zoey props herself up on my chest, a soft smile on her face as she looks at me. “I missed you too,” she says, brushing her hand against my cheek.

I notice again, the bruises and red welts around her wrist, my heart sinking and my stomach turning at the thought of someone hurting her. Gently, I take her hand in mine, lifting it to my mouth as I press soft kisses to the marks.

“Are you sure you’re okay?” I whisper, my eyes never leaving hers as I hold my lips against the marks.

Zoey swallows hard, nodding a little as she whispers, “Yeah.”

I press another kiss to her wrist, her palm before lowering her hand to my chest, resting it against my pounding heart. “I want to ask you about it, about what…”

“I know,” she murmurs, understanding me even when I don’t finish my thought. “I want to tell you, but…”

“But not tonight.”

“No,” she replies, shaking her head. “Not tonight.”

I nod, understanding as my hand slides up her back to her neck, my fingers curling softly around it as I pull her close to me, my lips brushing against hers. “I’m so fucking glad you’re okay, Zoey. I was…I was so terrified I was going to lose you.”

Zoey nuzzles her nose against mine. “I know, me too.”

“I love you. So much.”

She smiles against my mouth. “I love you too,” she whispers, before kissing me, deeper this time, as though she’s trying to show me how much.

I hear the rumble in my chest, the sound possessive and raw as my hand slides from her neck down her back, pressing between her shoulder blades as I hold her against me, kissing her deeply, with everything I’ve been holding back these past forty-eight hours.

When we eventually pull back, we’re both breathless. Zoey rests her forehead against mine, her eyes closed as her breath feathers my lips. As much as I want more, though, I don’t push it.

Instead, I pull her against me, wrapping her in my arms so her body is pressed against mine, a physical reminder that she is safe and back with me.

“My love,” I whisper, settling her against me, her head resting on my shoulder, her face buried against my neck. “Sleep. I’ve got you.”

Then I close my eyes and finally feel myself relax.

CHAPTER10

ZOEY

Iwake up to a dark room, my heart racing and a scream catching in the back of my throat, sending me upright. Sweat pours down my forehead, stinging my eyes as my heart races, reminding me that I’m still not beyond the abduction. It’s only been a few hours.

Ethan shoots up next to me, his hands immediately cradling my face.

“What is it? Are you okay?” he asks, his heart hammering in time with mine.

It takes me a second to realize I’m at my parents’ house in my childhood bedroom, a place that has always been my safe space.

“I’m okay,” I finally get out, the words ragged and laced with fear.
