Chad shuffled. “Okay, a lot.”

“And if it wasn’t for me having an unfortunate mishap with a key, we’d have gone to work with no one knowing. Now we’re out of a job. Temporarily hopefully, but I feel shit about it, so here’s me, pizza, and this.” He yanked the strap on his shoulder. “To cheer you up.”

Chad eyed Josh’s bag. “What is that?”

“My game console. I thought we could take our frustrations out on a horde of zombies.”

“Josh … I don’t know.” Chad glanced back at the house.

“Please, Chad. One game.”

“I don’t know how to play.”

Josh bunched his lips together. “Okay, a tutorial and one game.”

He stepped closer, wide-eyed and pleading, like the damn puppy Chad had internally nicknamed him. Chad slumped, admitting defeat, and gestured towards the house.

“One game.”

Josh shuffled the strap on his shoulder and passed Chad to get inside. “Your house is like the perfect setting for a zombie apocalypse.”

“My house is not scary.”

“I could’ve sworn I saw someone in the upstairs window.”

Chad paused, glancing at the stairs. “It’s just me.”

“Yes.” Josh looked at the stairs, too. “You and the ghost.”

He laughed, bumping his elbow into Chad’s side. “Come on, the pizza is getting cold.”

Josh pushed into the living room and dumped his bag in front of the TV. “Woah…”

Chad hurried in after him. “What is it?”

“Some creepy assed cushions,” Josh replied, throwing one at Chad. “It’s bad enough they circle your house, but you have them on cushions, too?”

Chad set the magpie cushion aside and watched Josh plug his game console into the TV.

“Get eating,” Josh said.

Chad sat down and flipped open the lid on the box. “So … you and Olivia, huh?”

Josh snorted. “Something tells me there won’t be a repeat of that.”

“Why not?”

“Nothing says romance like the DI kicking down the front door, and bursting into the bedroom to save you.”

“That sounds like a perfect romance plot for you and the DI.”

Josh reached for another cushion and sent it hurtling Chad’s way. He ducked, and it knocked one of Romeo’s precious magpie plates. Chad held his breath and thanked the gods it didn’t fall from the shelf.

“What about you, huh?”

“Me?”

“Yeah, you were in full-on make-out mode on the dancefloor.”
