“Whatever he wants you to do but you’re not ready for.”

Chad lowered his gaze. “No, not yet.”

“The longer you leave it, the worse it’ll get. Be honest with him. He might surprise you. He might be understanding.”

“You don’t know him.”

“You could always bring him along to one of our sessions.”

“No.” Chad laughed. “That’s not a good idea.”

“Why not?”

He sipped his coffee, just to do something, all while Keeley stared at him with her small, patient smile.

“This … sitting and talking aboutfeelingsis not his kind of thing.”

“It’s not yours either.”

“True.”

“You could suggest it to him, and see what he thinks of the idea.”

Keeley jotted something down in her notebook. Chad didn’t bother trying to read it, he shifted back on the couch and drank his coffee.

Keeley stared at him until he shrugged. “Maybe.”

“How are you coping with the suspension?”

“Okay. I’m keeping busy.”

“That’s good, Chad.”

“I may be off the case, but I’m not off the case.” Chad tapped his head. “This never stops.”

“As long as you respect the boundaries placed upon you.”

He lifted his coffee to his lips. “Always.”

Chad tightened his hold on his phone, staring at the name flashing on the screen. He took a deep breath and answered Ally’s call.

“Are you somewhere secure?”

Chad glanced out of the car window. He could see the receptionist watching him. When their eyes connected, she ducked behind the counter. “I’m in my car.”

“No one can overhear you?”

“No.”

Ally sighed. Chad frowned at the sirens in the background. She seemed to be moving away from them.

“We’ve got another body. No formal identification yet, but he’s not a brunette. He’s a redhead, he’s shorter than you, younger, too, and his shirt was open.”

“What did the killer write?”

“Is.”
