“I think a hose down is more appropriate.”

“Yeah,” Chad laughed. “I imagine it would be.”

He tried to flap his shirt, but it was glued to his skin. Romeo glared at his clothing like he was gearing up to tear it all off and set it on fire.

“So … you going to let me in or what?”

“I’m not letting you in the house like that.”

“It’s cold, and I’m tired.”

“Wait there.”

Romeo disappeared from the doorway. Chad frowned as he heard Romeo thumping around inside, and his frown only deepened when he returned with a towel hung over his shoulder, a bucket, and a broom.

“Um, what are you doing?” Chad asked.

“Isn’t it obvious?”

“No, not really.”

“Go around the other side of the house.”

“No way—ah.” Chad fought off the broom, but Romeo kept poking it him with it. He shoved at Chad until he gave in, and trudged around the house. He bolted towards the kitchen door, but it didn’t open.

He rattled the handle before slumping against the wall. “Asshole.”

Romeo appeared, narrowing his eyes. “Do you think I’m that stupid?” He placed the bucket on the floor and slid it over to Chad. “Shower gel, shampoo, soap.”

“Wait, hang on just a minute. You’re not hosing me down like some dog.”

“Not some dog, no—adirtydog.”

“Romeo…”

He unwound the hose from the wall. “Yes, Chad?”

“I’ll freeze to death.”

“Don’t be so… Sudden and striking, eight letters.”

Chad gasped, “Truthful!”

Romeo tutted. “Wrong answer. That’s nine letters. The word I was looking for was dramatic.”

“I’m not being dramatic.”

“I’m not letting you inside the house until you’re at least semi-clean.”

Chad darted looks around. “What if someone—”

“Sees? Are you more concerned about someone seeing you naked or someone seeing me, the serial killer, hosing you down?”

“Both.”

“No one’s out here, it’s just you, me, and your stink. Look.” He pointed to the field. “You’ve even scared all my magpies away.”

“Fine,” Chad said. He pulled out his wallet, keys, and phone and put them at a safe distance from Romeo manning the hose.
