“I’m not in the mood.”

“Tough.”

Chad rolled onto his back and stared unblinking at the ceiling until Romeo’s giant hand pressed over his face. “You’ll damage your eyes.”

“Huh?”

“If you stare at the light like that.”

“I wasn’t staring at…” Chad shifted his focus to the bulb overhead, “…the light.”

He frowned.

“What is it?” Romeo asked, looking, too.

“Nothing.” Chad shook his head. “Probably nothing.”

He got to his feet, still frowning at the light. Romeo paused the TV, watching as Chad walked a small circle in front of him, staring at the light the whole time.

“Chad…”

“I just need to check something.”

He left the room, but Romeo hurried after him. “Check what?”

Chad grabbed his keys off the side table and yanked open the front door.

Romeo caught his arm before he could leave. “Chad … check what?”

“I don’t know. I just need to think.”

“And you need to drive off to do it?”

“No. I need to do it in the car.”

Romeo released his arm. “You’re not taking off?”

“No.”

“Then you won’t mind if I join you in the car.”

“Knock yourself out.”

Romeo tilted his head and smiled. “Slightly inappropriate, considering…”

Chad groaned and slipped into his shoes. “You coming, or what?”

“I’m coming.”

Chad didn’t wait. He stumbled out of the house and jogged over to the car. Romeo came over and looked at Chad across the top of the car. “Now what?”

“It’s the middle of the night.”

Romeo glanced at the sky. “It’s two in the afternoon, Chad—”

“Bear with me. It’s the middle of the night, and you want to get home. What do you do?”

“Call a taxi.”
