“Uxbridge Primary School.”

Chad got to his feet, still holding the letter. “Can I take these?”

Eleanor nodded. “I know how this looks, but Tate’s not a killer. He’s a good boy. He knows the difference between right and wrong.”

“Even those that know the difference still cross the line.”

“It’s not Tate!” She twisted to face him. The anger in her voice faded into a whisper. “It can’t be.”

Chad dialed Ally’s number while jogging over to the car.

“Did you see the news—”

“Yes.” Chad jumped inside and slammed the door. “Ally, you need to find Tate.”

“Tate? Why?”

“He is our killer.”

Chad was met with silence.

“I know it sounds crazy—”

“Yeah, I’d say—”

“Eleanor said he was picking up Shawn from school. Uxbridge Primary? Do you know it?”

“Stop right there,” Ally snapped.

Chad bit his tongue at her sharp tone.

“Why have you been speaking to Eleanor? Christ, Chad. Does the word suspended mean nothing to you? Are you trying to get a dismissal?”

“I wanted to check in on Tate—”

“Wrong answer.”

“I was returning Shawn’s yo-yo.”

“If you were next to me right now, I’d slap you.”

“Please, Ally.” Chad adjusted the mirror, spying Eleanor on the driveway behind him. “You need to get over to Tate’s house, have a look at his bedroom, and interview his mum, but most importantly you need to find Tate and Shawn.”

“Wait … do you think Shawn is in danger?”

“Yes.”

“Fuck, Chad.” Her breathing came in rasps.

“What are you doing?” he asked.

Chad frowned at a bang and questioned Ally again, but she didn’t reply.

“You better not have had a heart attack.”

“Your concern is heartwarming,” Ally sniped. “And you’re on loudspeaker.”
