Vincent Whitehall.

The county’s biggest serial killer before Dr Carter.

Chad knew embarrassingly little about him.

He snatched his phone from the passenger seat and called Romeo.

“Are you okay?”

Chad gawped. He thought it would at least ring, and he could plan what he would say, but Romeo’s voice came from the phone as soon as he’d pressed his thumb on his numbers.

“Chad?”

“Yes … no…”

“What’s happened?”

“I think Tate is the killer.”

Chad braced himself, expecting an onslaught of questions.

“Okay.”

“Okay,” Chad breathed. “They’re looking for him, but I have a horrible feeling I might have started a chain reaction. I think Shawn could be in danger.”

“Tate’s younger brother?”

“Yes.” Chad looked out the window at the huge Wiltknot sign. “Tate has been writing to and visiting Vincent Whitehall, and I’m here, at the prison, about to speak to him … any advice?”

“Yes.”

“Let’s hear it.”

“Start the engine and drive home to me.”

“He might know something.”

“No doubt he will, but he’s not going to tell you, Chad. Why would he?”

Chad drummed his fingers on the wheel. “I don’t know as much about his case as I should.” He shut his eyes. “I know very little about the Whitehall murders if I’m honest. I’ve spoken to a lot of serial killers over the years, Romeo, you included, but I’m completely unprepared for him.”

“What is your goal from the visit?”

“While Vincent speaks to me his cell will be searched for letters. I’m here for information. A motive for Tate, an inkling over his mental state, a possible location he might drive to. Mygoalis to save Shawn.”

“Vincent won’t give you any of that.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve read up on a lot of serial killers that’s how I knew I was one before I even started killing. I found Vincent fascinating—”

Chad fought the need to shudder as Romeo continued,

“—he tortured his victims, and relished in the terror it caused everyone. He played both sides so well. The concerned swimming teacher desperate to protect his students, and the grotesque killer who scattered pieces of his victims foranyoneto find. Everyone is a player in his game. The press, the public, his victims, his students. He manipulated them all to add to his killer’s high. He won’t help you—you’re part of the thrill.”

“I’ve still got to speak to him if only so his cell can be searched, if only to distract him.”

“Don’t let him in your head.”
