PROLOGUE

Staring into the cell my daughter is being kept, I smile. Xavier pulls me into his lap as we watch the video camera feed, and I sigh as Lennon blankly stares at the white walls of her cell.

If she thinks she’s survived the worst of what we have to offer, she’s sadly mistaken. Lennon is here to become Xav’s weapon, and I don’t have a problem playing my part to help break her.

I never wanted to become a mother, and James chained me with pretty ideas before disappearing and leaving me with the brat. I enjoy sex, but the consequences of it leaves much to be desired, so I accepted Xav’s help when he offered to sterilize me years ago. Now when my mania overtakes me, he gives me a direction to wreak my havoc and never complains when he has to clean up one of my messes.

Like Prescott. Poor girl. She bit off more than she could chew and is now in the cell next to Lennon, practically drooling on herself. Prescott was a lot of fun in bed, but she started to grow a conscience when she overheard Grant talking about selling Lennon.

Lennon looks so much like me, outside of the dreadful tattoos and gray eyes. I don’t see the fuss in sacrificing her to some rich men to fuck her for a paycheck. I spent so much of my youth raising her and going to parent-teacher conferences, it’s really the least she can do.

Xav strokes my hair and I cuddle into his arms. “We need a test run to see if Lennon will respond to my commands when I trigger her,” he murmurs as he kisses my forehead.

Xav and I have been together for a long time, but I love that he doesn’t have a problem sharing. Grant and I have had a lot of fun over the years, and when Xav and I met, it just made sense to help elevate Grant’s career goals.

I’m a giver when I know I’ll receive orgasms as payment.

“Do you think she’s broken enough?” I ask, pouting.

Xav shrugs. “Experiments are filled with trial and error. Nurse Imelda is a bit of a curve ball that I wasn’t expecting, and finding out she’s a federal agent means we need to dispose of her. We have some time before the night crew comes in,” he murmurs, kissing my neck as I moan. “Why don’t we have some fun while we watch the tape I made of Lennon and the men I sold her to?”

I grin, because this man gives the best presents. Wiggling out of my dress, I straddle Xavier’s lap. Something about my daughter’s pain makes this all extra sweet.

Hold on baby girl, you ain’t seen nothing yet.

LENNON

Several hours later.

“Lennon, please just wait,” Orion begs. He’s so earnest, I can almost believe him. “Your men are in the woods searching for you. Greg is out there with them. We came to save you, but you saved yourself. I didn’t expect that, beautiful, but I’m also glad for it. Please, can you wait with me until they find us?”

“There’s a word… It makes me do things. I can’t have anyone use me to hurt people,” I confess. “I’m too fucking dangerous, even if what you’re telling me is the truth, it’s better if they don’t see me like this.”

Even as I say this, I don’t believe anyone is in the woods for me other than Xav and his men. I’m unworthy of a large-scale rescue mission like this.No one wants the broken, crazy girl.

“If it’s true…” I challenge him as I put the knife back up to my throat. “…tell them I love them.”

“Tell them yourself,” Orion screams in anguish, and it makes me pause. I’m a job. Why is he so upset?

“Lenny? Fooking hell, are you a sight for sore eyes, little Valkyrie,” says a voice I dream about.

Hand shaking, I see Roark standing a few feet away from Orion. He’s staring at me with so much hope, and I remember he said something very similar to me the last time I was lost.

“Roark?” I whisper. Everything begins to darken, the ground hard as I collapse onto it. I drop the knife and it bounces soundlessly next to me covered in blood.

Orion and Roark yell my name, Roark getting to me first and turning me onto my back. I whimper as I lose myself to the darkness, the last thing I hear is Roark whispering, “I’m here and I’m never letting you go again.”

Roark

I’m terrified as my knees hit the dirt, my heart in my throat. Part of me worries she went too far in this blasted forest and the kill switch activated. Another part wonders if I shocked her into fainting.

“Lenny, baby,” I murmur, brushing her hair off her forehead. Knowing she had a knife, I turn my phone flashlight on to make sure she didn’t fall onto it. I know she was panicking, but I need to know why. “Orion, I’m going to need you to tell me why she had a knife to her throat right fooking now.”

Orion steps over to me on light feet, finding the knife and picking it up. I relax a bit, glad she didn’t impale herself with the thing. It’s a wickedly sharp blade, and from what Imelda said, Xav gave it to Lenny to kill her. The blood glints from her rampage in the hospital earlier, but surprisingly it doesn’t turn my stomach. Instead, I’m proud of her for fighting back.

“She thoughtI was here to take her back to the hospital,” Orion murmurs, a note of horror laced through his words. “I didn’t think about what I’d say if I found her first.” He drops to his knees, carefully finding her pulse, relaxing a little when he finds it after a few moments. “I was so glad to see her, but she panicked when she saw me. I was so wrapped up in getting to her, that I forgot she doesn’t know who the fuck I am. Lennon was going to kill herself to keep me from taking her back. She really didn’t believe anyone was going to save her, so she decided to take things into her own hands.”

I can’t help it, he sounds so shocked and angry, I reach out and squeeze his shoulder.
