“He did say a nap, as in sleep,” I remind him, rolling my eyes.

“Is napping some kind of code for sex?” Melly asks and I snort.

Oh yeah, that’s going to be interesting. Deciding I’m not touching sex ed with a thirteen year old, I wave goodbye as Orion and I walk away.

“Dad, is that why you take so many naps with Mom?” Melly asks, and I can tell she’s following this line of interrogation to fuck with him.

Snickering, I lean into Orion’s side. I’m really going to enjoy living in Georgetown.

Twisting in my sleep,I wince as I dream.

I’m standing in a dark parking lot again, and a wave of deja vu hits me. My mom grins at me, stalking towards me.

“When will you learn that I don’t die easily, girl?” Mom scoffs, grabbing my arm roughly. “I’ll outlive you and this baby.”

I gasp, not knowing how she knows when no one else does. Attempting to pull away, she pushes me at someone.

“What do you want to do with her, darling? You know torture makes me hot,” she croons.

I gag, because she’s always overshared. “Carrie,” Xav sighs. “The bitch just won’t break.”

He pulls me along before finally tiring of my attempts to get away and throwing me over his shoulder. It’s as if all of my training is forgotten and I sob. My mother hurries after us, hitting the button on the key fob to open the trunk.

“Lennon, I’m afraid we’re just going to have to start from scratch,” Xav sighs, throwing me so hard into the trunk that I see stars when I hit my head. “I think I’ll have better luck if we harvest you for the baby inside of you, and then sell you on an auction block. You’re only good to be fucked to death. I’ll get my perfect soldier yet.”

Screaming, I sit up, tears streaking my cheeks. “Fuck,” I sob. It’s raining outside, the black clouds matching my mood. I’m alone in bed, and I have no idea what time it is. Scrambling off the mattress, I start hunting for clothing.

I need to go see Greg. I’ll never rest if I don’t see the bitch die for myself. Throwing a hoodie over my bralette and pulling on leggings, I shove my feet into boots. My hair is a mess of curls, but I don’t care, throwing the hood over my head.

Opening the door, Roark looks surprised as he sees me, and then anxious.

“Lenny, what’s wrong? It’s pouring outside, where do you think you’re going?” he asks, following me as I stalk down the hallway.

“I need to see Greg,” I sniffle, rubbing my eyes hard. “They’re killing my mom tomorrow, and I just… I need to be there.”

I thunder down the stairs, drawing more attention. “I’m just going next door,” I call out, opening the front door.

“I’m making Orion track your cute behind!” Roark yells.

As the door slams behind me, I hear Layla ask, “Is this some weird kink thing, or are you actually tracking Lennon?”

Smirking, I let them explain things as I look out at the storm. “Dammit,” I groan, carefully walking down the steps of the porch. The rain is freezing, and I dash across the lawn towards the connecting door between our houses.

Somehow, I don’t think that this is what Greg imagined when he said I might need to run one day.

I’m completely drenched by the time I’m at their door. I’m gasping for air as Greg opens the door.

“What the fuck,” he roars pulling me inside. “Lennon, what’s wrong?”

A towel is wrapped around me as I struggle to be there.

“I have to be there,” I gasp out. “I’ll never believe she’s gone otherwise. My mother’s come back from the dead before… I’ll never be able to trust that she’s not lurking in the darkness otherwise.”

I can barely see Greg with how hard I’m crying, but my head is suddenly against his chest as he hugs me.

“Fuck, I didn’t even think about that,” he mutters. “The cunt is worse than a roach, she always finds a way to survive.” I laugh, but it comes out strangled and weird. “Do the guys know you’re over here, or do I need to be on their ass for letting you run out here in the freezing rain?”
