His other arm wrapped around her waist and he was lifting her until her pelvis rocked against his and Mira went giddy with pleasure. His hard length pressed against her core and she ground her hips, begging for more. His mouth opened against her neck, warm and damp, and then he bit that sensitive spot and he timed it to his rocking hips and his filthy words about what he was going to do to her and how many times he was going to push her over the edge.

And beneath the heat spreading through her like molten lava, Mira’s chest tightened with emotion. She’d needed him tonight, only him. But a part of her hadn’t been hopeful that he’d give her this. That he wouldn’t—justly as she’d found out—laugh in her face at her request. And yet he was here, his kisses hungry, his caresses designed to drive her to the edge but his smile and his eyes, present, here with her. Holding her through one of the hardest nights of her life.

Gratitude sat like a lump in her throat but he’d hate it if she thanked him. Instead, she dug her fingers into his thick hair, tugged his head up and kissed the hollow of his throat. Her heart felt like it might explode out of her rib cage as his large, lean body suddenly stilled and Mira knew he was remembering just as she was.

The first time he’d asked her to kiss him, she’d buried her face in his throat, shy and tentative, and then she’d kissed him there and told him it was her favorite spot to kiss in the entire world and he’d held her like that for long minutes, his arms wrapped tight around her.

“That was enough then,ne?” he said, his dark eyes all inscrutable, the pupils blown wide with lust. “Not anymore, yineka mou.”

There was a warning in his words, even anger, and yet Mira didn’t care right then. “No, it’s not enough,” she said, sinking her fingers into his hair. She’d wanted this man like she wanted no other for fifteen years. And tonight, she was going to have him.

Tonight, he was all hers.

Tugging his head down, holding his challenging gaze, Mira pressed her lips to his. The first contact singed all the way to her toes. His lips were soft and firm and warm and she rubbed hers up and down, side to side, intent on learning and kissing every inch of him. She poured all the things she couldn’t say into the kiss, teasing him with her tongue, taunting him with nips of her teeth and doing it all over again. Slow and soft, she had her way with him, all the pent-up longing and frustration and desire of years flowing out of her. And then she bit his lower lip and tugged it into her mouth and when he growled, she swallowed the sound, then lapped at his lip with her tongue.

Her eyes flew open as her back met the wall. Locking her against it, Aristos rocked into her again and Mira thought she might just come from that. “Shall I show you how I like to kiss, Mira?” he asked, his fingers deep in her hair, her scalp stinging.

“Yes. Do whatever you want to me, Aristos. Just please, I don’t want to think. Only feel.”

“Your wish is my command, thee mou.”

And he did take over and how spectacularly he did. The kiss had none of the finesse and tenderness of the other kiss. None of the soft entreaty or the slow exploration of hers. It was all teeth and tongues and greediness and pulse-pounding pleasure and stolen breaths. Mira gave herself over to all of it—to the sensations, to the freeing she felt in her soul, and to him, her husband, Aristos Carides. At least for now.

By the time Aristos pulled back, she was half sobbing, half panting, thrusting her hips into his, chasing that mindless rhythm where nothing but sheer pleasure existed. The only place, it seemed, where Aristos and she could meet each other in perfect communion.

It was more than she’d expected when she’d signed her name on the marriage contract. More than she’d ever wanted for herself. Maybe it was even enough to sustain their relationship over a lifetime instead of five years, came the errant thought with such fervent hope and blinding clarity that she came to herself.

Only to realize that her feet were on the ground again and Aristos was not kissing her anymore and why was Aristos not kissing her anymore?

With a shaking hand, she pushed a stray lock of hair from her face and met his gaze. He wasn’t touching her but he hadn’t moved away either. “What’s wrong?” she asked, a thread of fear snaking around her. If he walked away now, God, she’d go mad.

One hand on the wall behind her head, he was breathing hard and watching her face. Always watching her, studying her, delving into her as if she was some big mystery he wanted to unravel.

A long time ago, the way he looked at her had made her feel on top of the world, it had made her feel like a...queen. There was that word again.

“What?” she said, feeling unnerved by the intensity of his scrutiny. She licked her lips and found his taste there. Lapped at it again, greedy for more. “Why did you stop?”

“I thought we should sort things out before this went further.”

Her mouth fell open in a gasp and she punched his stomach with her fist. Not that the man even grunted. “It’s clearly not that good between us if you can stop to scheme, Aristos.”

His palms clasped her cheeks when she’d have made her escape. “No,agapi. Stopping this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I’ve scaled mountains that killed other men.” He took in a deep breath. “But you should know, if you don’t already, that I’m a scheming, strategizing man to my core, Mira. I don’t take a step in a sport or in a case without planning ten steps ahead. It’s what kept me alive for the most part.”

Mira swallowed, uncaring what he saw in her eyes. “I’m listening.”

“Are you coming back to me? After you use me tonight?”

The laughing glint was back in his eyes but she had this knowing in the pit of her stomach that it was forced. That he had brought it in on purpose to lessen the gravity from the first question.

But his cover only proved her exhaustion at having to provide one of her own. It seemed she didn’t care anymore what he saw.

“I think so.”

“Not good enough, thee mou. There’s a reason I made the proposition to you. Carides’s board still needs to see me settle down. Leo still wants his heir in case I end up dead. If your answer is you think so, then this ends now.”

“No, wait,” Mira said, grabbing onto his arm. Words rushed out of her, fueled by something she didn’t understand. “Yes, yes, okay. I’ll come back and see our...arrangement through.” How that word stuck in her throat. “I still want a...baby. But I want some amendments to the conditions.”

“Agreed to any and all amendments,” Aristos said so fast that Mira’s head spun.
