“Not really,” she snapped.

“I think you seduced me because you wanted to soften me up so I’d give you what you wanted,” I said. “Just like you did to Jack.”

“You thinkIseducedyou?”

“You know you did.”

“Who was the person who put the other on the table?”

“I wouldn’t have done that if you hadn’t been hitting on me so furiously at the bar.”

“Oh, okay, now I’m not allowed to hit on guysat bars?” She shook her head. “You’re being stupid. I didn’t do anything wrong. If I want, I can go out to bars and hit on people.”

“Keep it out of my damn office; that’s all I’m saying. Go to bars and hit on whoever you want. That’s none of my concern.”

“I don’t know,” Alison quipped. “I think you’re jealous.”

“Jealous. Really.”

I was doing my best to sound mocking because I didn’t want her to know how close to home that accusation had hit.

Iwasa little jealous. And it had been years, no, decades since I’d felt something like that. I couldn’t remember feeling jealous over a woman in my adult life.

I didn’t want an actual relationship with Henry Barrett’s daughter. That wasn’t where the feeling was coming from.

I didn’t want to see her with anybody else.

“Listen, what you do on your own time is your business. But I will not have you disrupting my team at work.”

“You can’t get rid of me,” she folded her arms. “I’m here on assignment.”“I can get rid of you. I can send you back to the FBI and tell them to send someone who won’t fraternize with the team.”

“And I’ll tell them you were the one doing all the fraternizing,” she shrugged.

I looked at her steadily. “Okay, you tell them that, and let’s see which of us they believe.”

Her jaw dropped. “I can’t believe you’d do that. You’d destroy my career just because you can’t accept that I got a little flirty with some guy?”

“Stop flirting, and you won’t have to worry about such things.”

“You’re an asshole.”

Maybe I was. But I was going to have my way about this. “And when you come to this office,” I looked straight into her eyes, “you deal withme. I’m the NCO around here. You don’t show up on weekends and try to get junior officers to let you into the files.”

“Andyoudon’t tell me how to conduct my investigation,” Alison rebuked. “I tried coming to you with this, in case you’d forgotten. I spoke to you first. You didn’t want anything to do with the idea of helping me, so I found another way. You can’t hold that against me.”

“If I find you in here without my permission again, you’ll live to regret it,” I told her, knowing full well that I was lucky I had even found her today. I'd probably never have uncovered her little plan if I hadn’t forgotten my phone charger and needed to come in to get it. She would have gotten in and back out with whatever information she was digging for, and I would have been none the wiser.

I probably just shouldn’t have made this difficult for her. It’s my fault she had to look for a different way to get the job done.

No, I wasn’t going to take the blame for this. It wasn’t my fault Alison had seduced me and then moved on to Jack when she hadn’t gotten her way.

I wondered if Henry was aware of what a slut his daughter had turned out to be.

And once again, I imagined how hard he would deck me if he knew what I was thinking.

I picked up the computer she’d been working on. “You’d better come to my office,” I said.

“I don’t work for you,” she scoffed.
