But you couldn’t tell from my body, which was as attracted to him as I’d ever been.

He handed the bottle of beer back to me. I didn’t thank him. It wasn’t like he’d taken it from me politely.

“What are you going to do?” Danny asked me.

“WhatcanI do? I guess I could tell them my husband was deployed or something and that’s why he won’t be able to come around. I still might get fired, though. I don’t know if they’re going to want me on this film if I don’t come with a Navy SEAL.”

“But you said the screenwriter wanted you.”

“It’s Michael Sanders. He’s going to do whatever he thinks is best for his film, no matter what the people working under him want. And you know there are a thousand writers in Hollywood who would kill for a gig like this. He doesn’t need me.”

“I’ll do it,” Jake said.

We both looked at him.

“You’ll do what?” I asked.

“I’ll be your husband.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“That’s why you came here, right? You need someone to pose as your husband.”

“That’s not why I came here. I came to tell my brother what was going on with this potential job.”

Jake shrugged. “You do need a husband, though. You said so yourself. I’ll do it.”

“Yeah Jake, I agree with Olivia. I know what an ass you can be to women, and I don’t want you messing with my sister,” said Danny.

“Why the hell would you do it?” I asked him. “You don’t even like me.”

“Who says I don’t like you?”

Well, I don’t like you“ I stately boldly.

This was ridiculous. I wasn’t going to stand here and fight with Jake about the completely stupid idea of him posing as my husband. I was beginning to regret having come here at all.

I pushed the beer toward my brother, even though I had only had a little. “You can finish this,” I said. “I’d better get home and work on my resume if I’m going to be applying for jobs again.”

“Olivia, don’t give up on this yet,” Danny said. “It’s Michael Sanders. This is a dream gig for you.”

“I mean, I’ll do my best to keep it,” I said. “But I don’t think there’s any way.”

“I’m proud of you regardless,” Danny said.

“I’ll keep in touch with that screenwriter,” I said. “Maybe he’ll be able to recommend me for another project.” I hadn’t liked Jake’s comment about how it waswho you knewthat mattered in this industry, but there was some truth to it.

Halfway back to my car, I heard the door close behind me. I turned back, thinking it would be Danny coming to tell me something else.

But it wasn’t my brother. Instead, I found myself face-to-face with Jake Wallace.

As always, whenever Jake got this close to me, I found it hard to think. He might have been an asshole, but I was still a woman, and I couldn’t help wanting to climb him like a tree. I ached to wrap my legs around him and see if his dick was as big as the rest of him. But I’d never act on my desire because, to tell the truth, I couldn’t stand the guy.

“What do you want?” I asked him.

“To talk to you. Is it going to be a problem?”

I folded my arms across my chest. “So talk.”
