“You wouldn’t be if it weren’t for me. But you think you’ve earned all of this.”

Okay, well, that was annoying. “You’re saying I haven’t earned my place on this movie project at this point? I’ve contributed a lot to this production. Michael doesn’t value me because of my good looks, you know.”

She snorted. “No, that’s just the only thing you value aboutme.”

“Fucking—do you want me to pretend I don’t think you’re hot? Is that a problem for you?”

“I know I’m hot,” she snapped. “I don’t need you telling me things like that. It’s like you think I’m completely lost without you. I wish I had never asked you for a favor. It’s the biggest mistake I’ve ever made in my life. I should have tried to make this work out on my own. Failing would have been better than letting you feel like you’re responsible for my success.”

“You’re impossible,” I informed her. “You’re impossible to work with.”

“Thendon’t work with me. Tell Michael you aren’t going to come to Maui.”

“Drop it, all right?”

“You don’t need this,” she said. “You don’t have to do this. Your app is already a huge success. You don’t need to piggyback on what I’m doing. And you could fly yourself to Maui any time you wanted to go. You can probably charter your own private plane at this point.”

I probably could, actually. “Is it so hard for you to believe that this project might matter to me?”

“It’s impossible for me to believe that anything matters to you other than yourself.”

“Then I guess you don’t know as much about me as you like to pretend you do,” I snapped.

We were outside now, approaching our cars.

“Maybe I should come home with you tonight,” I suggested, knowing it would rile her up.

It worked. “You’re not getting any-fucking-where near me,” she snarled. “What are you talking about? I know you’re not trying to sleep with me againnow, right?”

“You do like it,” he said. “You always say you don’t want it, and every time we do it, you tell me you won’t regret it.”

“I also keep telling you we’re not doing it again. You don’t listen.”

I shrugged. “Actions speak louder than words.”

“I fucking hate you so much.”

“Yeah, you say that a lot too.”

She turned away from me without a word and walked toward her car.

I found myself feeling a little bit bad about how that conversation had gone. I knew I had provoked her.

But at the same time… she’d provoked me too. She had offered me this gig, and now she was mad because I’d had the audacity to want something for myself out of it. I still thought my behavior was perfectly reasonable.

And as I stared at her ass, I realized how much I enjoyed watching her walk away.

Chapter 12

OLIVIA

Bythetimewewere into the third hour of our flight to Maui, I was ready to jump out of the plane.

I hadn’t banked on how it was going to feel to be shut up in a confined space with Jake Wallace for five hours. I couldn’t stand the guy, as I wanted nothing to do with him—but my body was reacting to his presence anyway. It was infuriating.

I shifted in my seat and readjusted the book I was holding. It wasn’t much more than a prop, a shield between the two of us that I was using to keep him from talking to me. I hadn’t been able to focus on reading at all.

Apparently, it was working because he hadn’t tried speaking to me.
