There was something so animalistic about being together like this, in a cave in the dark, naked and curled up in each other’s arms. It was the best feeling in the world.

I let my eyes slip closed.

A moment later, he rolled onto his back, drawing me down on top of him, letting me curl up on his body so I didn’t have to sleep in the dirt, and there was something so sweet and generous about the gesture that it brought tears to my eyes.

The cold had left my body. I couldn’t feel anything but the heat of him and the strength of his arms holding me up.

Even though I knew we were likely to be rescued soon—even though Iwantedus to be rescued soon—a part of me wanted this feeling to last.

Chapter 15

JAKE

“Youawakeagain?”Iasked as Olivia stirred against me.

She sighed. “I keep falling asleep and then waking up. I can’t believe this night is still going on.”

“It’s been a long one.”

“Do you know where my clothes are? I’m starting to get cold again.”

I felt around until I found a piece of worn cotton and pressed it into her hands. “Here you go.”

Olivia wrestled with it for a moment, then paused. “This isn’t mine.”

“No, that’s my shirt. You need it more than I do.”

“Jake—“

“I’ve got an undershirt. Put it on, Olivia.”

She didn’t resist any longer, pulling the shirt over her head. I sat up and leaned against the wall of the cave, all the way in the back where the wind couldn’t reach, and pulled her into my lap. She curled up against my chest and tucked her head against my neck.

At least she wasn’t shaking anymore. “Are you okay?” I murmured.

“We should go back to the plane tomorrow and see if there are any other clothes on board.”

“I don’t really think there will be.”

“But can we look anyway?”

I hesitated. “I’ll go. I don’t want you to.”

“Why not? You’re not still worried the plane is going to explode, are you?”

“How did you know I was worried about that?”

“Because after all this rain, that seems pretty unlikely to me.”

She was right. “That’s not what I’m worried about,” I said. “But it’s still not that safe. The plane’s not stable. I don’t want you getting hurt.”

“I don’t want you getting hurt either.”

“I won’t,” I assured her. “SEAL training prepared me for this.”

“For investigating crashed planes?”

“I mean, notspecifically, but I know how to navigate wreckage without getting myself hurt. You don’t need to worry about me. I’ll be all right.”
