“I’m sorry,” I said. “I really am.”
“I know you don’t mean anything by it.”
“That doesn’t make it okay, though.”
She was quiet.
“Listen,” I vowed. “Things will be different when we get off this island and back on the job.”
“Will they?” She sounded doubtful.
“I promise you,” I said. “Everything we do on set from now on will be all about you. I won’t push Branches anymore.”
“I mean, you can still talk to Michael about it,” she said. “I’m not saying you can never mention it.”
“And Idefinitelywon’t make fun of you anymore. I guarantee it.”
She sighed, her body rising and falling against mine.
“Do you believe me?”
“I’d like to.”
“You can. Really.”
I felt her nod. “Okay,” she breathed so quietly that I could hardly hear her over the storm.
“I’m so sorry, Olivia. I’m so sorry that I made you feel like you couldn’t trust me.”
She didn’t answer.
I waited, wondering if she was going to, but her breathing slowly evened out, and I realized that she had fallen asleep in my arms.
I held as still as possible, not wanting to disturb her, and forced myself to confront the fact that I had made her unhappy. I had given her every reason not to trust me, and now I had only myself to blame for the fact that she hadn’t wanted me around anymore.
I’ll make it up to her.
We’d get ourselves off this island, and as soon as we did, I would turn over a new leaf. I’d make sure Olivia understood how important to me she really was.
I definitely didn’t want to lose her now.

OLIVIA
ThefirstthingIwas aware of as consciousness returned was the sound of waves crashing on the shore.
I kept my eyes closed as the memories came back. Oddly, the thing that lingered in my mind wasn’t the horror of the crash—it was what had come after.
Jake’s hands on my body in the dark,
Jake fucking me like he’d wanted it all his life.
Jake coaxing pleasure from me even as his own pleasure became too much for him to withstand.
I felt his arms around me. A moment later, I realized that we were upright. He’d fallen asleep sitting up and holding me in his arms.
Now I opened my eyes and looked up at him.
