“Just because I don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there!”

“I can’t believe you did this!” I didn’t want to yell at her while she was in pain, I really didn’t, butholy shit. “That plane was one of the only resources we had!”

“A crashed plane? It didn’t even work! You wouldn’t even let me get on it!”

“I was going to try to fix the engine and get the radio working so we could call for help!”

She stared at me. “Fix it with what? You haven’t got any tools. Do you even know how to fix an airplane engine?”

“I know a few things about engines.”

“What,car engines?”

“It’s the same basic principle. And I’ve worked on planes before.”

“That’s crazy. Your idea wasn’t any better than mine, Jake.”

“You’re trying to signal someone who isn’t even there. Youblew up the planefor no reason! How did you even do that?”

“The fuel,” she said. “It was easy to light. I’ve seen you making sparks with sticks since we got here, I know how to do it.”

“Fuck, I never should have taught you that.”

“Yeah. You should have handled everything by yourself without taking me into account because you’re the only one who ever has any good ideas.”

“You’re not going to convince me that this was a fucking good idea, Olivia. You could have gotten yourself killed.Fuck!”

“Quit screaming!”

But I couldn’t. I was too upset, too angry. How could she have been so stupid? “Weneededthe plane!”

“We didn’t fucking need the plane, Jake! You think your ideas are the best ones every time, but there was no way you could have repaired that damn thing. Admit it! It’s great that you wanted to try, but you’d never have gotten anywhere.”

“Okay, and where the hell have you gotten? We’re still stuck on this island, and now we don’t have the plane, and you’re fucking hurt.”

A shiver went through her, and her expression changed, and I realized I had hurt her feelings.

Fuck.

She was burned and in pain, and even though her idea had been stupid, she had been trying to help. I shouldn’t have yelled at her like that.

I was about to apologize when I heard a familiar sound overhead.

I looked up.

A helicopter was flying low above us—low enough that it couldn’t help but see the fire blazing up from the beach.

Chapter 19

OLIVIA

Thetriumphofhavingbeen right was so powerful that I managed to forget the pain in my arm for a few minutes as the helicopter touched down. All I could think about was the fact that I’d been vindicated. Jake thought he knew best about everything—he had always thought that—but now he was going to have to admit that he didn’t.

Other people could have good ideas too. My idea was the one that was going to save us.

And I fully expected an apology.

In hindsight, though, maybe that was stupid. When did Jake Wallace ever admit to being wrong about anything?
