The doctor coming into the room eventually brought me back to consciousness. He smiled at me and took a seat. “I’m Doctor Rashad,” he said. “I didn’t know if you caught my name earlier while I was working on your arm.”

I hadn’t. “I can’t say it’s nice to meet you,” I told him.

He chuckled genially. “That’s a hazard of my job. No one is ever happy to see me. But I completely understand. So, the good news is that your arm will recover fully with no serious complications. You might have some light scarring, but apart from that, you don’t have anything to worry about on that front.”

“That’s good to know.”

“Now, I have the results of your blood,” he said. “You’re doing very well for someone who was stranded on an island. What were you eating?”

“We ate fish and coconut.”

“I see. That was well done. In your situation, I believe it is critical that you maintain your protein consumption, which you have done admirably.”

“Thank you.” I wasn’t listening closely. It seemed he had only come to deliver good news, which was obviously exactly what I had been hoping for.

He nodded. “Now, of course, I would have liked to do some scans to make sure you didn’t sustain any internal injuries in the crash.”

“I don’t think I did. I haven’t felt anything wrong at all.”

“And I’m inclined to forego the scans under the circumstances,” he said. “I’m just pleased that you didn’t lose the pregnancy in the crash.”

I felt as if I had been dunked underwater. Suddenly he had my full attention.

“I’m sorry,” I felt as if I must have misunderstood him. “You’re glad about what?”

“Well, a crash like that could easily have caused a miscarriage. But you don’t seem to have had one. Of course, I think we should do an ultrasound to make sure—“

Then he stopped. It seemed as if he was taking note of the expression on my face for the first time.

“You didn’t know,” he realized.

“I’m pregnant?”

“Your blood test indicates that you are,” he said. He frowned. “I’m sorry. I wouldn’t have told you like that, but I assumed you knew.”

“I didn’t—I had no idea.” Now I was thinking back. When was my last period? I had a sinking suspicion that I’d missed it. I hadn’t been paying close enough attention because of everything else that had been going on in my life, and I had failed to notice this.

Oh my God.

The doctor hesitated. “Do you want me to get the gentleman you came in with?”

“No. No, I… I don’t want him.” That was the last thing I wanted. If I was pregnant, of course, Jake was the father—there were no other candidates—but I definitely wasn’t ready to discuss the matter with him.

“Well,” Doctor Rashad said, “I want to do an ultrasound to make sure that your pregnancy is still viable following the crash. The blood test indicates that it is, but we should make sure.”

I nodded, unable to find words.

Doctor Rashad got to his feet. “I’ll go and alert an ultrasound tech,” he murmured. “Are you sure you don’t want me to get someone? If not the man you arrived with, maybe there’s someone I can call.”

But there was no one.

I found myself staring at my hands in stunned disbelief after Doctor Rashad had left the room.

I’m pregnant.

What the hell was I going to do now?
