“Yeah, it is,” Jake said. “Although it’s obvious he’s not giving you any credit for it—publicly, at least.”

“I don’t care,” I said. “There’d be no way for him to give me credit without me being pulled back into his orbit. I don’t want to work with Michael Sanders again.”

“Well, he doesn’t seem to share that opinion. He wants to hire you for his next project.”

“Hewhat? I thought Michael never wanted to see me again.”

“I don’t think he did, but your writing proved itself to him, and now he has to admit that he was better off with you than without you.” Jake grinned. “I know the feeling.”

I blushed. I couldn’t help it. “So he wants me for a new project? Is it something to do with the military again?”

“I don’t think so,” Jake said. “Because he didn’t say anything about wanting me back. To be honest, I think he was surprised to find me answering your phone.”

“Did you tell him we’re getting married? That ought to make him happy.”

Jake laughed. “No, I didn’t tell him,” he said. “I figured I would let you decide whether or not you wanted to tell him.”

“Never mind that,” Danny said. “Are you going to take the job?”

“Of course not; I’m not going to take it,” I said.

“Damn right,” Jake agreed. “He might have realized how he needs you, but you don’t need him.”

“Doesn’t he know your screenplay is being produced?” Danny asked.

“I honestly have no idea what Michael Sanders does or doesn’t know,” I said.

“Well, he’ll know soon enough if he doesn’t,” Jake said. “This time next year, you’re going to be the one winning all the awards!”

I laughed. “Let’s not jinx it.”

But there was a part of me that did hope he was right about that. When John Mason, one of the writers I’d worked with on Michael’s movie, contacted me to see if I was all right after being fired, I shared a few screenplay ideas. John had been so excited about a couple of the ideas that he had put me in touch with some of his industry contacts, and I’d been quickly hired to write a full screenplay of my own.

I drew from real life, writing the story of a couple who crashed on a tiny island and found love while they waited to be rescued.Crashing Into Youwas going to premiere in just a few months, and I already couldn’t wait to see my words on the big screen. I was much more excited about this project than I had been about anything I’d done with Michael Sanders.

Whether awards lay ahead for me or not, I had no idea. But there was no denying that I had achieved my dream of finding success in Hollywood. I no longer needed to suck up to hot-shot directors. I’d made it on my own.

Jake sat down beside me on the couch and wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

I cradled Lucas close and leaned into him.

I had never been happier in my life.

The End.
