“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered, his lips hovering just above hers. “We don’t have to fake shit,” he groaned, his tempo increasing, our skin slapping together as he fucked me harder. “We can have this when we’re not in front of people, and they’ll never—they’ll never—“

He cut himself off with a roar, and I felt the heat as he came inside me. It was enough to push me over the edge, my body spasming around him, my legs trembling.

He rolled off of me and went to the bathroom to clean himself, and I lay still for a moment, doing my best to recover.

The whole thing had been so unexpected—but there had been no need to resist it. From the moment he’d kissed me in the elevator—or had I kissed him? It was such a blur—we had been heading for this. He’d ignited something in me that couldn’t be doused. The only choice had been to let the fire burn itself out.

But what he’d said in the heat of passion, suggesting we could have this on the side…

He couldn’t possibly have meant it. He’d said it because he was about to climax, that was all there was to it. I didn’t need to worry about it.

Because this was not going to be a regular occurrence. I wasn’t going to screw Jake Wallace every time we were in the same room now. What we had was still nothing more than a business arrangement. I’d let him get under my skin tonight, but it was all out of my system now.

I was sure he understood what had happened. He had been caught up in the moment, that was all.

I got off the bed and tugged my dress down, even though I was sure I still looked fucked out and messy.

I passed him on the way to the bathroom, and he looked me up and down approvingly. “That was hot,” he said. “You sure are something else.”

“You can have the bed,” I said flatly, it was simpler than explaining that it was a one-time thing. “I’ll sleep on the couch.”

“You don’t have to—“

“You’re too big to fit on the couch,” I told him. It was the truth. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll be fine.”

I pulled the bathroom door shut behind me before he could argue.

Chapter 4

OLIVIA

“YousleptwithJakeWallace?” Tanya shrieked

I winced. “Keep it down,” I begged. We were alone in our apartment, but that didn’t stop me from worrying that someone would overhear our conversation. The last thing I wanted was for anyone to know what had happened between Jake and me last night. I didn’t even want to know about it myself because now I couldn’t seem to stop fantasizing about having him inside me.

“But this is insane,” Tanya said. “We need… what do we need? Wine?”

“It’s eleven a.m., Tanya.” I was lucky she wasn’t working today. Tanya was an aspiring actress, but at the moment, she was a waitress at a ritzy hotel near the beach. It was pretty unpredictable which days she would have off of work.

Tanya shrugged. “I don’t mind starting early if the story is juicy enough.”

“It’s not juicy,” I told her.

“It sounds pretty juicy. You andJake Wallace.”

“You don’t have to keep saying his whole name like he’s famous.”

“He is famous, though. He’s the inventor of Branches.”

I rolled my eyes. “I don’t care if he invented something that made him a bunch of money. I still see the same guy who always treated me like I was worthless when we were young.”

Tanya nodded. She’d been witness to some of Jake’s meanness. She’d never been permitted to accompany us on our family vacations, which had astounded me at the time because it was so unfair. Still, when we’d been at home in Maryland, where all of us had grown up, she’d had plenty of opportunities to witness his behavior firsthand.

In truth, some of it had been directed at her—when she’d been hanging out with me, Jake had been vocal about wanting nothing to do with either of us.

Unlike me, Tanya had never spent any time feeling particularly sad about the boys rejecting our company. But she probably felt that way because Danny wasn’t her brother. I didn’t think I would have cared half as much if Jake hadn’t been constantly interfering with Danny’s willingness to spend time with me.

A memory came to mind. I’d been nine years old and had gotten my first pair of rollerblades for my birthday after having admired Danny’s for weeks. He had promised to take me out one Saturday and teach me how to use them, and I’d been looking forward to it all week long.
