No, I told myself. There’s no way he could have known and followed me here. I didn’t talk about the trip at work once it was booked, I made sure of it. I didn’t want people there to know where I was going. It wasmylittle secret. The only person who knew about it was Rosie, and she wouldn’t have told anyone.

“Alright, well, I guess I’ll see you around,” I said. My cottage was right there, but part of me wondered if Hunter might try to follow me inside if I went in, and that was something I definitely didn’t want to deal with.

Hunter kept standing there though. He didn’t take the hint, or he had chosen to ignore it. Either way, I decided to dig a little, see what I could find out.

“So when I requested the days off, were you already scheduled for your vacation?”

“Yeah, I was. Which is why I wasn’t sure if it would work letting you take the same days off, but I decided fuck it, we both deserved it.”

“Mmm-hmm, and where did you hear about the resort?” I asked.

His lips curled back into a devious grin. “Where did you?”

“I asked you first.”

He shrugged. “Word of mouth. You know how it goes. A friend told a friend, and well, I decided it sounded interesting. So how about you?”

“Same. I heard from a friend.”

“It’s really peaceful here,” Hunter said, briefly looking at our surroundings.

I hardly had a chance to admire the resort, I had been too focused on avoiding Hunter to really soak it all in. The wind blew through the trees and there was a waterfall somewhere in the distance. The running water was soothing, not too loud.

Other than that, complete silence. Not a soul around.

Normally, I would have loved that, considering I was on vacation but standing there with Hunter, in an empty walkway, surrounded by trees, without another person nearby, sent chills down my spine.

“So, um, I hope you find your cottage just fine, it seems like a really large resort,” I said, hoping again that he’d get a hint.

“You want to escort me? In case I get lost, I mean.” His smile was playful, but it still left me with an uneasy feeling.

“Uh, no, I’m actually really tired, Hunter, and I want to be clear, I came here to get away from work so–” Before I could finish telling him that I expected some privacy, I heard footsteps.

We both turned at the same time, and my heart jumped into my throat as one of the largest men I had ever seen walked toward us.

He was at least six-five, if not taller, with broad shoulders and arms as thick as tree trunks. His hair was dark and kept military short. His dark brows furrowed as he looked Hunter up and down.

The look on the man’s face was serious. His chiseled jaw clenched tightly; his fists balled up at his sides. He was a man on a mission it seemed.

I stepped back, trying to give him room to walk past us, but he didn’t walk by. He stopped.

“Is there a problem?” The man’s gaze never left Hunter. “Are you having trouble finding your cottages?”

His dark eyes turned to me briefly. “No, mine is right here,” I said.

“And you, sir?” He turned back to Hunter, crossing his thick arms in front of his chest.

“Uh, yes, my original assignment was in this area of the resort, but I just got a notification that it’s been changed. Do you happen to know why they changed my assignment at the last minute? It seems incredibly unprofessional.”

The man stared at Hunter, not answering his question. Instead, he called out, “Mark, can you escort this man to his cottage?” I looked past the massive man and realized he wasn’t alone. Another man dressed in security attire stood behind him.

“I asked you a question—” Hunter’s voice rose.

“And I don’t have an answer for you, I’m not in charge of room assignments,” the man said.

Mark stepped up and motioned for Hunter to follow him. Hunter hesitated, and the larger man scowled at him, letting out a low, frustrated half-sigh, half-growl. That was all it took to send Hunter off with Mark, muttering under his breath about how he was going to complain about how rudely he had been treated.

Relief washed over me, and I relaxed. I hadn’t realized how tense I was around Hunter until he finally left.
