“Okay then, so I am to let everyone go, and then what? Do all the work myself? Are you trying to force me out by overworking me?”

Hunter let out a snort of a laugh and covered his mouth, pretending to cough. Hilda looked over at him and smiled, batting her eyelashes. He wasn’t interested in her though, his gaze was firmly planted on me.

“What is it? What’s so funny, Hunter?”

He looked over at Hilda.

“Nothing is funny, Bianca. But I think you’re confused. When I said I was eliminating your entire department, that includes you, dear.”

That “dear” sounded anything but sweet.

“Excuse me? I don’t think you can do that—”

“I can if there’s sufficient reason to believe it would benefit the company. Just because your father made it harder to fire you doesn’t mean he made it impossible. We have to do what’s best for the company, Bianca—”

“And you think you know what’s best for the company, Hilda? You’re literally running it into the ground.” I could no longer keep my cool. Not that it mattered, I was out of a job regardless and so was my team. My heart sank for them, all of them. It wasn’t fair that they were going to be unemployed because of me.

No, scratch that, they weren’t getting fired because of me.

They were getting fired because my stepmom was a hateful, vicious woman and because Hunter was an asshole.

Hilda started to argue with me about what was best for the company, but I held up a hand and stopped her.

“It doesn’t matter. I just realized something else though. You two? You’re fucking perfect for each other. It’s a shame Hunter is too obsessed with me to even look your way, Hilda, because you two are a match made in heaven. Good luck running the company completely into the ground,” I said. “You’re already well on your way.”

I turned on my heels and marched out of her office, heading toward mine. I had no intention on staying the rest of the day. I was out of there as soon as I could tell my team the sad news and grab my things.

My stomach roiled and I rushed to the bathroom. I ran into the first stall, dropped to my knees and began throwing up my lunch from earlier. It made sense that I was sick, considering all the stress I had been under and the fact that I just lost my job. At least that’s what I told myself.

The bathroom door opened and Rosie called out for me. “Snow, are you okay?”

“I’m fine,” I lied, letting her into the stall with me.

“Are you sure you’re not pregnant?” Rosie teased.

I should have laughed, but her words made my eyes go wide.

Pregnant? I hadn’t even thought about that.

“Oh shit,” I said, pulling out my phone and opening up the Flo app. With everything going on, I had completely forgotten about my period… which, as the app showed me, was over a week late.

“Wait… you really could be pregnant?” Rosie’s expression turned serious.

I dropped to the toilet seat, with my face in my hands.

“Yeah, I might be pregnant. Pregnant and unemployed, what a great combo.”

“Unemployed?”

I looked up at my best friend and told her the news.

My phone rang. I debated on whether or not to take the call until I saw who it was. A smile spread across my face as I answered.

“Hello, beautiful,” I said.
