I usedto live for my job. Everything I did was for this firm. All my energy went into building what it’s become today. Now, as I sit here and listen to Mrs Dalmore drag on and on about her asshole of an ex-husband, all I can think about is how much I would rather be listening to Dani talk to me for hours on end about her friends, her childhood, her hometown…

“You look exhausted, Alistair,” Mrs Dalmore says.

I clear my throat. “It was a late night. Sorry,” I apologise and shuffle the papers around on my desk. I need to focus on her divorce. This woman is paying me top dollar to make sure she doesn’t lose the entire business that she’s built up, all to her husband whose been sponging off her for the last five years.

“Well, you shouldn’t work so hard,” she says, her voice shifting to a sultrier tone. I watch as she stands from her seat and walks around my desk. Her hands land on my shoulders. “I bet I can help ease some of this tension you have.”

“Ah… I’m actually okay. Please have a seat.” I stand to put distance between us.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had a client come on to me. I’ve never been tempted to take any of them up on their not-so-subtle offers. And I won’t be starting now. Even if my cock weren’t so attached to Dani, I would never fuck a client. It just makes for bad business and crosses lines I don’t ever want to toe.

I move over to the bookshelf. “Please have a seat, Mrs Dalmore, or we can reschedule for another time,” I tell her again as she takes measured steps towards me.

“Don’t be coy, Alistair. We’re both adults. No one has to know. It can stay between us. Besides, I plan on having my mouth way too full to tell anyone anything.”

My jaw lowers in shock as Mrs Dalmore drops to her knees in front of me. Her hands land on my belt buckle. Reaching out for her wrists, I’m attempting to pry the woman off me just as the door swings open, and I turn to see Dani stop dead on the threshold.

“Ah, sorry… I thought… I’ll come back when you’re not so… busy,” she says before pivoting on her heel and slamming the door.

“Fuck. Dani, wait!” I yell out, pulling away from the woman still clawing at my trousers.

“Alistair, stop. Just let me help you! I want to.” Mrs Dalmore continues to tug on my belt as I try to step around her.

“Get up, get your shit, and get out of my office. This is unacceptable behaviour, Mrs Dalmore. Find yourself a new lawyer,” I tell her before running out the door. I go straight to Dani’s office, only to find it empty.

Fuck.

I run through various hallways, checking the copy room and other common areas in search of her. She’s not anywhere.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” Nathan asks, stopping me with a hand to my chest.

“Dani, I need to find her. Have you seen her?” I ask him.

“Yeah, she just came out of Xavier’s office,” he says.

I head that way and bust in without knocking. “Where’d she go?” I ask Xavier.

“I don’t know what it is with you two fucking idiots, but I’m seriously getting tired of good staff quitting on me,” he yells the moment I enter.

Last month, Bentley gave her notice because she didn’t want to be the one sleeping with her boss. That boss being Nathan. Somehow, we managed to keep her, which is great because she’s a damn good lawyer.

“What are you talking about?” I ask Xavier.

“What’d you do? Never mind. It doesn’t matter. Whatever you did, just fix it because Dani just fucking resigned,” he groans in reply.

“I’ll fix it,” I say with more confidence than I feel and walk out.

It isn’t long before I’m pushing through my office door again. I find the room empty. Thank fuck Mrs Dalmore left, because if she were still here, she’d be copping the full extent of my frustration right now. I pick up my keys and phone, then make my way to the elevators. I need to get to Dani’s place and sort this out. I know what she thinks she saw, but she has to know I’d never do that to her.

I mean, she has to believe me, right?

NINETEEN

Iknow we didn’t have lunch plans today, but I need something from him. Even if it’s just a quick hello before I go work through lunch. I blame it on Alistair really. I mean, how can he expect me not to become addicted to his lady Viagra?

It’d be an impossible feat for anyone. Let alone me. It’s not like I’ve had a fulfilling sex life before him. I thought I did. I thought what Hunter and I had was great. I thought wrong.
