“She usually stays in the guest room, so she wasn’t happy when Sam told her she needed to get a hotel room.”

Elle frowned. “He can’t kick you out of your home.”

I gestured around. “I’m here, aren’t I?”

“What exactly did he say?” Elle asked.

I pursed my lips. “That it would be less awkward if I wasn’t there.”

Elle cringed. “That doesn’t sound good.”

“He made it sound like I’d be more comfortable here, and then I met her, and I understand why.”

Elle leaned forward. “Is she that bad?”

“She doesn’t like me. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m the nanny, I live with Sam, or she sees me as trying to replace her as Maggie’s mother.”

“I can see her thinking something like that. She might be used to coming home and having Sam and Maggie to herself. Maybe she thinks of them as hers.”

“While she’s living thousands of miles away?” I asked.

Elle shrugged. “Who knows what’s going on in her head.”

“I have a feeling she’s complaining about me right now. And the worst part is, I don’t know if he’ll stand up for me.” He seemed to cave when he was in her presence.

Elle was quiet for a few seconds before she spoke. “He’s worried about starting something he can’t stop.”

“What do you mean?”

“If Felicia’s upset, she might request custody.”

“How would that work? She lives so far away, and she’s never taken care of her.” She was a doctor, so her job was demanding, and she had no idea what it took to raise a child.

“I don’t think she knows either.”

“It doesn’t seem fair that she can just disappear and show up with demands. I have a feeling she’s going to tell him he can’t keep me on.”

“You think he’ll fire you? After he said he needed someone consistent in Maggie’s life?”

“Maybe.” I thought my position in their house was solid, but as soon as I saw Felicia, everything shifted under my feet. I wasn’t sure of anything anymore.

“I’m sorry you’re going through this.”

The front door opened, and Amelia raced to the door to greet Gray.

“There’s something else,” I said, hoping to discuss my personal relationship with Sam while Amelia was out of earshot.

“Do we need wine for this?”

“It’s probably a good idea.”

“Let me see if Gray can keep an eye on Amelia. We can sit downstairs.”

I helped Elle open a bottle of wine and carried the glasses downstairs to the basement.

Sitting, Elle asked pointedly, “Is there something between you and Sam?” When I shot a questioning glance at her, she added, “I sensed that something was going on when you came for dinner.”

I held up my hands. “I know it’s a bad idea. He’s my boss. I’m his employee. I’m living in his house.”
