“You like it?” I asked carefully, not able to gauge her reaction.

“I love it. I can’t believe we’re going to live here. It’s better than I ever imagined.” Her eyes were filled with awe.

“You won’t miss the ocean?” I asked, thinking of where she’d grown up.

“We could visit other beaches, right?”

“Whenever you want.”

“I’d love that.”

“I want to give you everything.”

She raised one hand to my cheek. “You and Maggie. That’s it. The rest of it is like icing on a cake.”

I tipped my head to the side, considering it. “I don’t know how I feel about being compared to icing on a cake.”

“I can make it up to you later.” Then she lifted up on tiptoes and whispered in my ear. “When I lick icing off your—”

Thankfully, she didn’t finish her sentence because I had a clear vision of what she meant. “I want that too.”

She smiled, and it was naughty and carefree, everything I’d ever hoped she’d be. “I love you.”

“And I love you.”

We ate our lunches and explored the property, talking excitedly about what we wanted in the house. I knew the process of building it would be just as amazing as living in it.

AFTERWORD

My inspiration for Alice’s mosaics is a cool story, so I thought I’d share it with you. I bought a crab mosaic at a store on Main Street in my town. I made a mental note to inquire after the artist because I wanted to include it in one of my future books.

A month or so later, my realtor, Melissa, posted about her daughter, Hayden selling these mosaics. The same one I have on my shelf. I immediately reached out to ask how she got started, how she creates the mosaics, and other aspects about her business.

I was writing this book at the time, and I thought it fit perfectly with Alice’s character. She’s trying to find herself, and she loves art but has no idea if she could do it as a career. I hope you enjoyed Alice’s journey and her love story.

If you want to see Hayden’s mosaics, you can check them out on her social media platforms and her website.
