Page 76 of Tempting Love

“Is there anything I should know?” What I really wanted to know was whether they knew about us.

Alice met my gaze. “You know them, right?”

“Elle cuts my hair, and I’ve seen Gray around town.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about.” Then she lowered her voice. “Besides, they don’t know about us.”

I wanted to kiss her on my way out of the room, but Maggie asked Alice to help her open the bag of goldfish. I changed into jeans and a tee. My sheets were still mussed from last night and smelled faintly of sex. Feeling slightly guilty I hadn’t thought to wash the sheets in case Maggie came in, I gathered them and put them into a laundry basket. Making the bed with fresh sheets felt like erasing what happened last night.

On the way to Elle and Gray’s, my fingers itched to lace with hers. Maggie kept a steady commentary of everything she’d done with Grandma, so I could at least steal glances at Alice.

She was engaging with Maggie, and I couldn’t figure out if she was okay after last night, freaking out, or wondering if we’d made a mistake.

We arrived at Elle and Gray’s house before I could decide whether I was making a mistake in pursuing something with my nanny.

Walking up the drive, Maggie rang the doorbell. My heart rate kicked up when I realized this was the closest I’d probably get to meeting Alice’s parents. Tonight was important. I needed to make a good impression.

Gray opened the door, smiling down at Maggie. “You must be Miss Maggie. Amelia’s waiting for you in her room.” He gestured at the steps, and Maggie was off.

“Be good,” I called after her. I wanted to say no fighting over toys, but I hoped she’d make good choices.

“You must be Sam,” Gray stated, giving me a once-over.

I nodded, feeling a little awkward under his scrutiny. “That’s right. Maggie’s father.”

“Gray, let us in,” Alice said, a little exasperated with him. “Sam’s my boss.”

“Right. Your boss.” Gray hovered by the door as if he had something to say.

“You want to talk?” I asked him when Alice passed by and went to find Elle in the kitchen.

“That’s a good idea.”

Gray closed the door and led me to the basement. It was a bit of a man cave with a bar, a media room, and a large sectional. “This is nice.”

Gray didn’t offer me a drink or a seat. He just leaned a hip on the pool table and crossed his arms over his chest. “What’s going on with you and my sister-in-law?”

So, it was going to be like that. I held up my hands in surrender. “I’m not sure what you’ve heard.”

“She’s brought you here. It must mean something.”

My stomach churned. Should I be honest with him? We hadn’t discussed this scenario. I wasn’t sure what she wanted Gray to know. “She said she felt bad for leaving us at home while she ate a home-cooked meal.”

He dipped his chin slightly. “I bet your family has get-togethers.”

I flushed. “My family can be overwhelming.”

His face softened slightly, but he didn’t say anything.

I appreciated that Gray was watching over her, especially after what happened with her last boyfriend. I respected his protectiveness, and as a result, felt like I needed to be honest with him. “I like her, but we’re being cautious because of Maggie.”

“So, you’re keeping whatever’s going on to yourselves.”

That comment sliced into my heart a bit because it made it sound like I was keeping it a secret. “We went skiing last night, so I wouldn’t say that.”

Alice had been in my lap. If anyone had seen us, it was clear what we were to each other.

“I don’t want her to get hurt. She was a shell of herself when she first moved back, and she’s finally getting better. I don’t want a setback.”
