Sam glanced in the backseat. “She’s asleep.”

“Yeah, I didn’t think she’d last on the way home.” I turned forward again in time for a few plops of raindrops to land on the windshield.

Sam flipped on the wipers. “Gray talked to me about you.”

Worried, my gaze flew to his face. “He didn’t warn you off me, did he?”

Sam shook his head. “He wanted to make sure of my intentions.”

I sighed. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know that was going to happen, but I guess I should have. Gray’s protective of me. Despite all the trouble I’ve caused.”

“I don’t think he sees you that way. I’m sure he loves you like a sister, and he knows you don’t have parents looking out for you.”

Warmth filled my chest. “That doesn’t give him the right to make you feel uncomfortable.”

Sam covered my hand with his. “I’m happy you have him on your side.” Removing his hand, he continued. “But it was intense.

I winced at his characterization. “How bad was it?”

“I reassured him that we’re taking things slow, and we’re being careful because of Maggie.” Sam tipped his head toward the backseat.

“You told him we’re keeping it a secret from her?” I asked carefully.

“Yeah, and he understood that. I think he’s just concerned for you, and I get that.”

It felt good that Gray was looking out for me, but I wasn’t sure how I felt about keeping it quiet. Logically, it made sense to keep things a secret from Maggie. There was no need to ever tell her if things didn’t work out. But what if this thing between us was just physical, even if it felt like more? I’d been so emotionally deprived my entire life I might be reading more into what was going on.

At home, I held the doors so Sam could carry Maggie to bed. I put on the same lace pajamas I’d worn the night everything changed between us, grabbed my Kindle, and relaxed on the couch until Sam returned.

He walked into the kitchen, his brow raised. “You’re still up.”

I stood and moved toward him. He looked good in everything he wore, but I wanted to see him without clothes. His gaze intent on me, I moved his shirt up, touching the warm skin of his stomach.

“You want to take this upstairs?” Sam asked, his voice guttural.

“If that’s okay?” I wasn’t sure how he felt about doing anything with Maggie sleeping in the next room. I’d respect whatever he decided.

The next thing I knew, he was lifting me, and my legs straddled his waist. “You’re killing me with these pajamas. If you can call them that.”

I smirked because I knew what I was doing when I put them on. I licked his earlobe, enjoying the shudder that ran through his body.

In his bedroom, he carefully set me on my feet before shutting and locking the door. The lamp offered a soft glow. The room felt intimate.

I had a feeling tonight was a turning point in our relationship. It wouldn’t be resigned to times when his mom could watch Maggie. This felt like more, and I wanted to enjoy every moment.

Sam reached for me, but I sidestepped away. I lifted my top over my head and tossed it behind me. Hooking my fingers in the waistband of my shorts, I shimmied them down.

Sam’s eyes heated, and he rubbed his chest as if there was an ache he wanted to soothe.

Standing naked in front of him, I felt seen in a way I never had been before. I felt beautiful and desired, and like I deserved everything that was happening in my life.

“You’re gorgeous.” He stalked toward me like a rubber band had been snapped. His mouth crashed down on mine, his hands on my hips, then my ass. When his hand moved to the front of my thigh, I widened my stance, inviting his fingers where I needed him the most.

He dropped to his knees in front of me, groaning as he parted my folds. “You’re already wet.”

I ran my fingers over his short hair. “For you.”

I’d never felt like this for anyone else. I wanted to be vulnerable for him. I’d bared my soul to him, and he was still here. He hadn’t left. He wanted more.
