He replaced the stopper while drinking the liquid. “And?”

“He said it was possible guy two left,” she said as he came back over.

“Left where?” he asked, handing her the glass.

“The state.” The liquor burned a familiar path in her gullet. “He said Silvio Manzani sent some of his guys to Miami.”

His brow reacted. “Miami? Why?”

“I don’t know. But I figured if Manzanis are going to be in your cousins’ neighborhood, you’d want to let them know.”

He caught her chin to raise it up. “We’ll go home when Doyle leaves.”

“I don’t mind if we stay here, provided you come to bed with me at some point. When I wake up without you, I’m lonely.”

“Yeah, and horny.”

“That too,” she said and laughed. As he turned, she put down the glass and snagged his buckle. “Can I ask you a business question?”

“You want to know why Vex was here.”

“Well, yeah, but my business, not your business.” He frowned. “Can I interview you about Dorsey?”

“No,” he said. “Not for your paper. Don’t print it and I’ll tell you everything I know.”

“Why can’t I print it? If there’s a chance—”

“You print it, they kill her.”

Shock didn’t begin to… she stopped breathing and just…

“She’s alive?” she managed eventually.

“Aye.”

“Oh my God, she’s alive! And you know she’s alive? How do you know?”

“We get proof of life every few months. I get proof of life. Clancy can’t look at her anymore.”

“You know where your uncle is?”

“Aye,” he said and tightened his grip. “What did you say to me after I told you where to find the Russian dolls?”

“You know things,” she exhaled.

“I know things.” They stared for just a second before the door opened. “Upstairs.”

She pounced off the desk, keeping quiet and small as a stream of well-built guys entered. This time, she didn’t loiter on the stairs and ascended to go to the bar.

Dorsey was alive. All this time, he knew… they needed to have a conversation. Fast.

SHOCKS OF PLEASURE still shimmered through her. Spasms of delight shook her as her heart slowed. In bed next to Connel, at the club, sweat clung to her skin. Sated need was impossible to comprehend. She’d never been so sexually satisfied and desperate at the same time.

In the darkness, her awareness was still hazy when he kissed her quick then jumped out of bed.

“Were you thinking of her the whole time?” he called from the closet.
