“Hey,” Rudy says, sensing the tension in the air, alternating between glaring at me and reading Paigelynn for clues. “What’s going on?”

“Winnie was sniffing Butter,” Paigelynn jumps in, moving to him with a grace he doesn’t deserve, leading with an affectionate squeeze of his arm that makes me want to rip it off and eat it. “You missed it.”

“I missed something, didn’t I?” he growls.

She’s smooth. I’ll grant her that. Eyes darting to the left and right exactly once, she has split-second instincts. This woman is cultivated. Trained.

Trained for what?

“I’ll teach you what I learned,” she replies with a smile, patting his arm again. “No worries.”

“Promise? Because it sounds like what you learned is something I really want to do with you.” He lowers his voice. “Or to you.”

His laugh is forceful, demanding, the kind of sound that makes sense between two people who are in love and joking.

But runs chills down my spine as I hear it.

Paigelynn looks like she’s using every resource to hold it together, her outer image rippling slightly. The guy is breaking some unspoken rule between them, and I’m starting to suspect everything about them is a lie.

Including their marriage.

Especially their marriage.

Married people have a rhythm, especially when they’re young like this. I’ve seen it on the street, the newlyweds who are sickeningly in love, or the ones figuring out they’ve made a huge mistake. Rudy and Paigelynn are neither, and that’s enough to make me start cataloguing.

Building a case.

And if I weren’t so damn turned on by her, I’d have a sharper focus. Lust dulls the mind as it heightens the need.

“Let’s go home and practice, Princess,” he says with a show of dominance, his demonstration as shallow as a peacock displaying his plume.

I don’t give a rat’s ass what this guy thinks of me, but it’s clear he cares that I know he’s “won” her.

But does she want to be won?

“Cam,” Paigelynn says, extending her hand for a shake, a gratuitous gesture we both know is driven by sheer longing. As my fingers slide against hers, I nearly groan, the press of her warm hand against mine so intoxicating, I have to have her.

Have to.

“Pleased to meet you,” I say, holding her gaze, our hands making love to each other as I let go and let myself feel everything she’s making me feel. It threatens to steal me from myself, so big, so powerful.

Who knew two people could feel such a connection?

I know now.

And I can’t live without it.

Rudy clears his throat and thrusts Winnie at Paigelynn’s chest, forcing her to let go of my hand and take the dog. Another bone-crushing shake from him comes my way, but I don’t care.

Touching her was worth it.

Touching her will always be worth it.

“Nice dog,” is all he says to me as he tries to turn my arm into a noodle, but I don’t let him. Why would I?

He’s not worth it.

Guys like him never are.
