Except – I know something they don’t know. And that’s why I’m here.

That’s why I went along.

My mind keeps going back to the red Mazda, and the way the driver looked right at me before speeding away.

It’s just your imagination, I tell myself. He's not out to get you.

Suddenly, living at the safe house makes a hell of a lot more sense.

And sounds more appealing.

Bzzz.

I answer my phone, the Bluetooth kicking in.

"Yeah?"

"You on your way?" Debbie's clipped tone makes my gut tighten.

"Sure am. Needed to get a new toothbrush and some pajamas."

"Pajamas?"

"I don't own any."

A sound of disgust greets me. "Thanks for that image."

"What image?"

"Of you sleeping naked."

"I never said a word about my body. You did, Deb."

"Fuck off, Cam. Get here ASAP. New report says your DNA filtering code may have found one even closer than we thought."

"Where?" Ice water shoots through my veins. Damn it. What do they know? I thought I was ahead of them.

"Just get here and we'll talk."

"On my way. I'll be there in thirty. See you then."

I hang up, not bothering to wait for a reply.

Paranoia is something I try to avoid, but it's not hard to understand how sometimes, it's warranted.

In my experience, most people are out to get something. Money, power, sex.

I'm not sure what I'm seeking in this job.

I fight against the injustice, the people who use their power to break others.

Code is the new law. That makes me a sheriff of sorts.

At the next traffic light, I pull up behind a white SUV. The license plate is from Minnesota, and says: VIKINZ4EV

Geez. I can't escape them, can I? Even the cars have subliminal messages for me.

Except... I'm lying to myself when I claim I don't know why I do this. A flash of my sister, Mira, hits me.
