“Cam Perkins,” I say, pulling back on the leash as Butter does what I wish I could do.

Stick my face in Princess’s crotch.

“Paigelynn,” she said in a breathy, eager voice, stepping forward with her free hand to shake mine as I yank on Butter’s leash. Normally, the man in a couple does this first, but nothing’s normal right now. My pulse races, cock hard, body primed for danger.

Rudy’s definitely dangerous.

But Paigelynn – I think she’s the one who is downright lethal.

My heart shifts gears, eyes wanting nothing more than to watch her forever, hands itching for more of her skin, the paltry handshake a sick little tease of a taste. Her scent wafts up as we move our hands, a sweet, fruity smell that makes me wonder what her musk is like after a sweaty night in bed, all her muscles loose and free, her juices in my hair.

Rudy’s eyes narrow as he watches our too-long handshake.

“Give Winnie to me, Princess,” he says in a voice that’s too close to an order for my liking. Paigelynn does as asked, forced to drop my hand, my middle finger lingering on the pulse of her wrist just long enough to feel it quicken.

Then Rudy holds the dog, who goes stiff, clearly not liking the man. He extends a hand. I brace for the power play, knowing he’ll do the man-crush handshake.

Predictable. He’s predictable as my bones yield under his iron grip. I give it right back, though, his eyes widening for a split second with surprise.

I hate this macho bullshit.

Doesn’t mean I won’t play the game to win.

“Rudy Manko,” he says, the name completely false but I play along. “What’s your dog’s name?”

“Butter.”

“Butter?” Paigelynn gasps.

“Short for Butterscotch.”

Rudy smirks, dropping the handshake, looking around. “How long’s this class again?”

“Half an hour,” Paigelynn and I say in unison.

“Waste of time. Winnie’s too stupid to learn anything,” he mutters, giving me one of those looks that says he wants me to agree.

Paigelynn’s tongue rolls along her teeth but she smiles at me. “Rudy is such an optimist.”

The guy kisses the top of Winnie’s head. “You know I’m just joking.”

Dogs love affection. Give them a crumb of attention and they want the whole loaf of bread. Not this one, though. It freezes when Rudy dispenses that kiss.

I tense up.

“Princess?” I ask her, ignoring Rudy. “A nickname?”

Her eyelashes flutter but she doesn’t look away. “Yes.”

“Any chance you’re true royalty? One of those long-lost royals you see in movies or read about in books?” I joke.

“You never know,” she says slowly as Rudy smothers a smile.

Piecing together the tiny bits of info I’m taking in isn’t leading up to a whole explanation. Something is off.

“Wouldn’t that be something,” I say, moving closer to Paigelynn, leaning in like a confidant telling a secret. “To be descended from kings and not know it. A person would be super special. Destined for greatness and completely clueless.”

I’m nothing if not persistent.
