I do as I’m told.

In the distance, I see Malcolm on the porch, glaring at us the closer we come.

“Killing this man solves nothing, Jason. It just makes you a murderer. He’s done nothing wrong.”

“He took you away. Tried to lure you away.”

“You followed us?”

“I heard enough.”

“If you kill him, you’re just a cold-blooded murderer!” I hiss, hoping that shame will work somehow. “I am your Princess, your future Queen, and I forbid you!”

We reach the van, and Jason looks at Malcolm, giving him a single nod. Then he uses the hand not holding the gun to Cam and opens the back door to the van.

A stench, like rotten meat and bowels, wafts out. I look inside and begin to gag.

“That’s the actual dog trainer, Princess. The man you’re defending killed innocent people to get to you.”

“No!” Cam whispers, fierce and intense. “That’s not true.”

Jason just snorts and grabs his arm, pulling him toward the porch as Malcolm shuts the van door, his hand on my elbow.

I am numb.

I am shocked.

I am sick.

“He’s wrong, Paigelynn,” Cam says as Jason leads him to the porch, where Cam halts. So tall, so broad and strong, he is impossible to force forward, though Jason tries.

“You – you killed those men?”

“I didn’t kill the dog trainer. It’s a set-up.”

“They always say it’s a set-up,” Jason says in a snarky voice, yanking Cam’s arm.

“I refuse. If I go in there, you’ll just kill me.”

“We’ll kill you out here, bud. Just more paperwork if we do it in public, You’re dead either way.”

Cam shakes him off, pulling his arm free, holding it akimbo.

And then.

Then he puts his hands on his waistband and slowly pulls it down.

“What the fuck do you think you’re...” Malcolm says, but his words stop as we all see it, too.

A tattoo.

Not just a tattoo.

The tattoo.

“I am the light. I am the truth. I am here to serve others,” he says as Jason drops the gun, shoving it in his holster, looking at Malcolm with a helpless, stunned expression.

The tattoo is on his inner thigh, along the groin, and oh, so familiar.
