“It was taking Delaney from me.”

“What do you mean? You’re in so much trouble, Luka.”

“Why? I don’t like when things take people from me,” I tell her truthfully. And that’s exactly what that rabbit was doing. He was taking her away from me.

“You … you can’t do this, Luka. You just can’t.” she scolds as she grabs my arm and drags me into the kitchen just as my father enters the room.

“What is this?” he asks, taking me in.

“Luka killed the rabbit.”

“For what reason?” he asks, directing his question at me.

“He was trying to steal Delaney away from me, and you told me never to let anything take those you care about,” I remind him of his words. My father looks angry, but then his face softens.

“You’re right. I did. No more killing animals though, Luka. They can’t steal people from you.”

“He was though, Papa. I swear to it,” I argue, knowing exactly what the rabbit was doing. He walks over and runs his hand along my head before shaking his own.

“No, Luka. She just liked playing with it. Delaney likes you just fine,” he tells me. Too bad she’ll never be playing with it again.

“What did he do now?” My older brother, Romano, asks as he strolls into the room.

“Killed the rabbit,” I declare proudly as he looks at me with a crooked smile.

“You should have him committed,” Romano tells my father. Romano is older than me by seven years, and he acts it too. He thinks he can tell me what to do but can’t. I’m just as strong as he is. At least, that’s what I tell myself.

“No one is being committed. He made a mistake. One he clearly thought about,” Father says, looking back down at me. Then he kneels, so he is face to face with me.

“You can’t go around killing animals, Luka. It doesn’t matter if Delaney likes them more than you.”

“I can and I will. I will kill anyone trying to take her from me.”

Chapter 2

“Idon’t like the idea of this,” I tell my father as I sit across the desk from him. He glares at me, his eyes narrowed.

“What don’t you like?”

“The fact he would have anything to do with our empire, for one. We’ve worked our asses off to make this family what it is today. How dare he think marrying her into the family would change that!” I snap loudly.

“Not to worry, Son, I was never going to have her marry you. She will marry Romano.”

“Like hell, she will,” I grit my teeth.

“The decision has been made, Luka. You have no say in this. Learn to accept that.”

“I have no say in this? I work for you, kill for you, and I have no say in this?” I roar this time. My father leans back in his seat casually, crossing his arms over his chest as he glares at me. How can he say that to me? Of all people?

“You said it yourself, Luka. You work for me. That’s what you do. You don’t run this family. I do, and it would serve you well to remember that.”

“Serve me well? What will you do, Papa? Hmm? Kill me? Send one of your men after me? They couldn’t touch me,” I remind him of the cold hard truth. They couldn’t touch me if they tried.

“Let’s just calm down, shall we? There’s no need to get worked up over this,” he says, grabbing two glasses off his desk and a bottle of amber liquid. I watch him fill both glasses, passing me one, which I take. I gulp down the liquid in one go and motion for another.

“We can’t trust him,” I remind my father as he pours me another drink. This time I take it and sit back in my seat, calming myself if only slightly.

“He’s been trusted in this family for years, Luka. You all of people should know that. Ross wants what we all want,” he says.
