“Can’t we stay a little longer?” I love hearing the whining in her tone. It’s cute.

“I wish we could. We’ll make plans to come back.” I’d bring her back in a week if that’s what she wanted. She nods as she sips her coffee while I watch her.

“What are you looking at?”

“You. My wife.”

“Your wife,” she repeats as if she’s never heard the word before.

“I always knew I was going to marry you. It was just a matter of time.”

“How did you know?”

“My mother told me. She saw the love between us even when we were kids. She told me you would be the girl I’d marry. Luka, she will be your wife.”

“She knew you that well?”

“I don’t know if she knew the lengths of what I’d go to for you, but she knew I cared about you,” I tell her.

“I like that. I like that she knew,” she says softly.

“Me too. I just wish she was around to see her grandkids. I may not have always made sense to her, but I think she understood me in a way,” I confide.

“She was your mother. Of course, she understood you. There are days I wish mine was still around too.”

“You seemed to adjust to not having her,” I say.

“I was young when she died, Luka. It was easier that way.”

“I’m sure it was.”

“But you’re different. You’ve always been different.”

“Different, how?”

“You do things that aren’t always right but make sense to you.”

“Is that a problem for you?” Delaney shakes her head.

“No. Not anymore.”

“Good. Finish your coffee, and let’s get packed.”

Chapter 16

Home, sweet home. Isn’t that what people say? I don’t think home is sweet. At least not my father’s home.

Delaney is at my house, the one I kept for just us to settle in while I check in with my father. He doesn’t look too well, and that causes me to smile more.

“You look ill,” I state.

“I’m perfectly fine. You missed your brother’s funeral.”

“You think the killer should have attended?” I ask him in disbelief.

“No. You shouldn’t have attended. You’re right about that. I don’t even want to look at you after what you’ve done.”

“After what I’ve done? You should have listened to reason in the first place, Father. I warned you. I warned you both, and neither of you took me seriously.”
