Page 6 of Greed

“I’ll ask once more. What are they getting out of this?” Giovani doesn’t care if I pull the trigger, but the others do.

“Security,” one of the men at the table blurts.

“For what?”

“Any dealings we have in the city,” he says. I nod my head and pull the fucking trigger anyway. One down, three to go. I walk to the next man, raise the gun and hold it against his head.

“What makes you think he’s going to make good on his promise of security? Nothing runs through this city without the other families approval. You’re playing a losing game,” I inform them. They all blink and look to Giovani for help or insight. They won’t get any. All he’s doing is scamming them out of money. Money he doesn’t need.

“His word,” one of the men says as I chuckle.

“His word? His word means nothing. Without the other families agreeing, his word is worth shit, isn’t that right, Giovani?” I ask, looking directly at him.

“You can’t kill me.”

“Perhaps not. That doesn’t really mean anything in the grand scheme of things. This could be taken to the council, and let them sort it out.”

“You wouldn’t dare,” he sneers at me. I raise an eyebrow and challenge him.

“Why wouldn’t I? I don’t remember giving two shits about you or your famiglia. I would turn you over in a heartbeat.”

“What do you want?”

“What do I want? What makes you think I want anything from you?” I ask him. He doesn’t have anything I could possibly want.

“You have to want something. You want money?”

“I have money.”

“Gold?”

“I have gold, silver, and whatever else you plan on offering me. There’s only one thing I need,” I tell him.

“What is it?” Raising the gun, I fire off a few more shots, killing the last of the men in the room while Giovani watches me intently.

“I need a favor of sorts.”

“What kind of favor?”

“There’s going to be a murder, and I need someone reliable on my side.”

“What? Who is being murdered?”

“That isn’t up for discussion right now. I need to know you will have my back when this goes down.”

“If you go against your family, Luka, there is nothing I can do.”

“In a way, it will be, but they aren’t who I’m concerned about. The Costa’s are.”

“Shit, Luka. You want me to go against Ross Costa?”

“Not so much against him, no. I just need to know that you will be present when a certain thing happens. More importantly, you will have my back, so they don’t shoot me in it.”

“Why would I do that?”

“Because you don’t want anyone knowing about this little gambling ring you have going on, and I can make it all disappear,” I inform him.

“You’d do that?”
