I hold Mel for a few minutes as her tears run their course, and as she dries the last of them off her face, she finally pulls back and gives me a tight smile. “Sorry,” she murmurs.

“Don’t be sorry,” I tell her, squeezing her hand. “We’ve all been there.”

And with that, she picks up her plate and tries to get on with her night, the heaviness lingering on both our shoulders.

I wake on Saturday morning an absolute nervous wreck.

Sean is supposedly picking me up today for our dirt bike riding adventure, and I haven’t heard from him or his brother since the phone call. Clearly, he isn’t coming. It was probably some big joke, and while the thought shouldn’t upset me, it somehow hits me right where it hurts. This guy is no one to me, just some random man I found on Tinder. Sure, I saved his little girl, but nothing more. I was doing my job and I would have done exactly the same thing had it been anyone else.

“What the hell is going on in here?” Mel demands, storming into my room and flopping down on my bed before pulling the blankets right up to her chin. “It’s way too early for all this noise.”

“I have this stupid riding thing today, no thanks to you,” I mutter, rolling my eyes as I continue yanking clothes out of my closet and trying to figure out something that will be suitable for today.

“Quit stressing,” she says on a yawn. “You’ll be fine. And if by any luck, you’ll be screaming his name all night.”

“Ugh,” I groan, pulling out a top before tossing it straight back in. “Shut up. I’m not screwing him, despite how much I might want to. It’s not like that.”

After another few minutes of searching, I give up and drop down on the end of my bed, unsure why I feel so deflated. “What the hell am I doing?”

“You’re overthinking it is what you’re doing,” she tells me. “You’re having fun. It’s dirt bike riding. No one expects you to be the belle of the ball. They’re a bunch of hopefully nice people who just want to take you out to say thank you for saving the little girl.”

“Then why am I so nervous about this?”

“I don’t know,” she grunts. “Maybe because you actually like him and have been masturbating all week to the thought of him giving you the best dick you’ve ever had.”

“I have not been doing that.”

Mel laughs, a stupid smirk stretching across her lips. “Girl, we have paper-thin walls. I know exactly how often you’ve been thinking about him. I can even count just how many times the imaginary version of Sean got you off.”

Fuck.

My cheeks flush, and I thank my lucky stars that Mel is not the type of girl to get offended by a little bean flicking. Hell, she’s practically the poster girl for that shit. Glancing away before the embarrassment consumes me, I let out a heavy sigh. “I hardly know the guy.”

Mel sits up and reaches down the bed to squeeze my shoulder, and as I meet her gaze, I find a warm smile playing on her full lips. “You might not know him on a deep, spiritual level, but you do know him,” she insists. “You know he’s a great father. You know he’s kind. You know you’re attracted to him, and you know the thought of spending the day with him is making your stomach twist and turn with somersaults. You’re just nervous, and you have every right to be, but I don’t think you need to be.”

My stare hardens and I let out a huff. “I really hate it when you’re right.”

“Anyone would think you’d be used to it by now,” she tells me. “Now, get your ass off the bed and get yourself dressed. Otherwise, lover-boy is going to show up and you’ll still be in your underwear.”

Shit.

“Fine,” I groan, getting up and making sure to jostle around as much as possible, knowing how it gets under her skin. Then after doing a deep dive through my closet, I find a pair of jeans and a black tank before holding them out to her. “What about this?”

“Cute,” she smiles. “But grab the other tank. It shows more cleavage.”

I roll my eyes but, nonetheless, I grab the other tank and make my way up to the bathroom. “Don’t forget to shave your kitty. Lord knows no one has ventured through that jungle for months,” Mel teases as I close the bathroom door behind me.

Taking my time in the shower, I make sure every inch of my skin is looking flawless because you never know, I might just end up in his bed tonight. Well, here’s to hoping anyway. Though, considering he has a kid, the chances of that actually happening are slim to nothing.
