When he finally pulls away, I’m left gasping. His hand moves to my back, and he guides me through the crowd. They part even more easily than they did for Tessa, and no one touches me at all.

We don’t stop at the bar or even at the door. When we get out into the cool night air, he says, “Text your roommate that you’ll be home late.”

“I’m going home tonight?” I ask.

He grins at me. “We’regoing back to your apartment tonight.”

Chapter 21

Emery

I know that tonight is a mistake, but I don’t care. For the first time since I left college, I’m making a selfish decision. I’d been able to push Madison away when it only affected me, but when I saw how upset she was, I couldn’t help myself.

I can accept sacrificing my happiness for my business, but I couldn’t accept hurting her. She didn’t leave her office for the rest of the day, and I know that I’m the reason for the lack of motivation.

It’s lucky that she went to the one place she’d told me about that night we drank together. Otherwise, I’d never have found her, and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to convince her to leave with me.

Thank all that’s holy that I found her. Everything in me wanted to rip that fucking guy’s head off when I saw him with his hand under her shirt. I was good, though. I just watched, since she had approached him. But when she had to step away, it was too much. I couldn’t stand by and watch while a guy groped her after she was trying to push him away.

He’s just lucky that I’m more worried about Madison than I am about dragging him outside and beating him senseless. I don’t know exactly why I care so much, but I do.

Now that she’s sitting in the passenger seat of my Porsche 911, I know what I’m doing is a terrible decision. It goes against everything I’ve taught myself. Just like this morning when I pushed her away.

That doesn’t change the fact that I’ve got butterflies or that my cock is rock hard and straining at my slacks.

“What are we doing that’s so different?” she asks.

I don’t know. I’ve been trying to figure it out. “You’ll have to wait and see.”

I pull out of the parking lot and look over at her. I can’t help but appreciate the outfit she’s wearing. There’s no bra, and I can make out the outline of her nipples through the thin black material. Her skirt’s slid high up her thigh, and all I want to do is drag her into a dark corner of the world and rip every piece of clothing off her body.

But I want her to know that I’m not just here to fuck her. I want more than that. That’s why she’s so damned dangerous. If she’donlybeen the best fuck I’d had, I’d have repeated last night, but there’s more to her calling to me than her body.

That doesn’t mean I want to skip the sexy bits. “Give me your thong,” I say, and her eyes open wide.

“This skirt is too short to wear it without underwear.” Normally, she’d blush, but she’s too turned on for that.

“That’s why I want you to give them to me. Tonight, we’re going to do things I’ve never done with any other woman, and I want you very aware of how wet you are while we do them. I want you to be a little nervous. Then, when the night’s over, I’m going to take you back to your apartment and make last night feel like a lazy Sunday morning.”

She looks like she might argue, but then she hikes her skirt up and pulls her thong off. I get a quick peek at what hides underneath, and my cock swells in response. God, it’s hard to think about what to do tonight when I’m desperate to taste her. I can see how wet she is, how the light glistens off her, and it’s so tempting.

She tosses her thong to me, and then she grins. “Why’d you come to the club, Emery? You made it seem like you were pushing me away today.”

The question that I can’t answer. “I can’t let this thing between us become common knowledge at the office. If your campaign goes like I think it will, you’ll be on the fast track through Aspire. But if everyone knows we’re fucking…”

She finishes the sentence for me. “Then you won’t be able to promote me based on my merit.” The words come out almost like a sigh of relief. The lie was good enough to satisfy her. She thinks I’m just trying to keep her future safe.

The best lies aren’t lies at all. They’re truths that hide the truths that matter.

“So, you didn’t drop me?” she finally asks.

“I did not drop you. I wouldn’t have rescued you from an asshat at a club if I’d dropped you, and I’ve never spent the night with a woman twice in a row. You’re an exception to all my rules.”

She nods and gives me a wide smile. “I’ll trust you on this, Emery. At work, I’ll be discreet, but I won’t hide anything elsewhere.”

Typical Madison. She doesn’t understand how hard this is for me, but I don’t blame her. She knows about my history with other women, and she’s taking a stance. That makes sense. She doesn’t want to be disposable.

Instead of responding to her statement, I say, “When was the last time you played skee-ball?”
