Dante catches his half-dollar and slides it into his pocket. “The intern’s good. Roll with it and have a little faith. I sat in your idea room the other day and listened to her. She’s a smart girl, and her ideas are solid.”

Noah and I both pause and turn to Dante. “You sat in the idea room?” Noah asks slowly, as though he can’t believe it.

Dante smirks. “I was bored and wanted to see how well the thing worked for the next company I invest in. It’s boring just dealing with money, so I plan on being a more active partner in my next company. Thought I’d steal an idea or twenty.”

I turn to Noah, and we both realize for the first time that Dante could turn into our biggest competitor if he wanted to. I trust him, but Dante is a wild card. Unlike Noah and me, he doesn’t have the weight on his shoulders.

He chuckles and says, “Don’t worry. I won’t be joining another advertising firm. I’ve had about enough of the business. But you two came up with a lot of interesting ideas that translate well across all sectors of business. I think I’ll be playing with them. Disrupting new industries is just about the most fun a man can have without a drink or a woman.”

Noah tries to pull the conversation away from Dante’s future, back toward the issues at hand. I think a lot of it has to do with the desire to nail down our plan, but there’s an uncertainty we both have with Dante.

“So your advice is to ignore the fact that we aren’t growing like we have for the last eight years?”

Dante nods and pulls out the half-dollar again. “We all know earnings are tattletales for the past, not the future. Em’s new intern is the future. Let her figure out how to win, and then we’ll explode. Think about it like taking a nap before the big game.”

Noah glances at me, and I say, “That’s what I’m thinking, too.”

“I don’t enjoy depending on a twenty-two year old, Em.”

I know the feeling. “Neither do I, but she also paid for life and college while doing it part time with absolutely no resources. I think I trust someone with three years of success more than anyone who has no proven success stories.”

Noah sighs and turns back to the chart. “Two campaigns. That’s how long I’ll be patient. After that, we pivot if she hasn’t proven herself. She goes, and we steal the people who’ve had success at other companies.”

I want to argue. I want to tell Noah that we’re keeping Madison at Aspire regardless of her success, but I can’t let my feelings get in the way of business. That’s how you destroy a company.

“Deal. Two campaigns.”

Noah nods to himself. “Until then, we’re going to need Emery to make a few more showings. And maybe he could sell the fact that we’re jumping into the ChitChat space head first. If you’re that confident about the intern, then let’s build some hype so we can really explode when we push it to everyone.”

Damn it. That’s the last thing I want to do. It’s my job, though, and Noah’s not wrong. Any other time in my life, I’d have agreed completely.

“Okay. There’s a thing tonight that I’ll go to.”

Now, the only question is how do I do that and keep Madison happy at the same time?

Chapter 28

Madison

The last script is done. Brandon and Shonda are talking about going out drinking tonight since we don’t have to show up tomorrow. Stephanie’s going out with her boyfriend since she’ll be gone all weekend in Barcelona.

I have no idea what I’m doing. It all hinges on whether Emery wants to do something tonight. I’m trusting him. He says he wants more than a good time, and I’m taking him at face value.

That’s the only reason my panties are sitting in my desk drawer, and I’m soaking wet thinking about how badly I wish Emery would come into my office and tell me to follow him. Never in a million years did I expect this to happen.

Yet, I’m more worried about what happens tonight. I may crave his physical affection, but if that were all, I wouldn’t be questioning my plans. I’d go home, crack open a smutty romance, and spend the night in fantasy land if he’s busy. Instead, I’m terrified about what “busy” would mean for him.

I want him to touch me, to laugh with me, and more than anything, to spend time with me. Me. Not with some random woman he has to take to an event.

With a sigh, I pull my phone from my purse and realize that I missed a text message from Emery.

Emery Brooks:Undo the top two buttons on your blouse and come to my office. Lock the door behind you.

Without any hesitation, I put the phone in the top drawer of my desk right next to my panties and undo the top two buttons. My black lace bra is obvious if anyone were to stand over me, but I don’t have any intention of letting someone stop me on my way to Emery’s office.

I take a deep breath and stand up. My body is already throbbing in anticipation. My pussy aches just as much as it did this morning, and that only makes it better.

This is definitely a fantasy of mine, but I’d never have followed this twisted rabbit hole if anyone other than Emery was standing at the end. Already, I’m slightly light-headed as my body prepares for what’s about to happen.
