As his hand moves toward my breast, I pull it back to my neck and squeeze. He tightens his grip as he watches me. Slowly, he squeezes more and more until I can’t breathe at all, and even the moans don’t escape my lips anymore.

It’s perfection.

It’s also too much for Emery. Even before I’ve had my first orgasm, he groans, and he gives me a few more quick thrusts before releasing me.

I’m not even frustrated as I look at him staring at me with that shocked expression. When he steps back and lowers my legs, he just keeps staring at me as though he doesn’t recognize me.

And I smile back at him before standing up. “That was incredible,” he whispers.

“Now you know what you’ll be missing if you decide to climb into someone else’s bed.”

He shakes his head as he sits down in the client’s chair without his pants on. “I wouldn’t do that,” he says.

I grin as I put on the bra. “Maybe not. Are you going to complain about it?”

He just shakes his head, speechless. As soon as my blouse is on, and my skirt is straightened out, I say, “Enjoy your evening, Mr. Brooks.”

And I walk out of his office. There’s still a tremor of fear inside me, but that isn’t going away. Especially not during his first evening out without me. I knew this was going to happen, and I feel like I did the only thing I could do to make us both feel better.

That doesn’t mean that I’m going to be happy tonight.

Chapter 29

Emery

The charity event is anything but interesting, and I keep checking my phone to see if Madison posted any new ChitChat videos. With how much time we’ve spent together, she hasn’t had time to post anything new, and I’ve started re-watching some of her older ones to get to know her better.

Then I feel hands on my shoulders, softly squeezing. “You seem so tense,” my date whispers into my ear. “I’m sure that I could help you relieve some of that tension.”

Ariana Russo, a very popular Italian model, is my date tonight, and though she’s as pretty as they come, I have absolutely no interest in her offer. I wasn’t lying when I told Madison that she was the only woman I wanted in my bed. I didn’t need to be shown what I’d be missing if I messed things up, but I won’t complain about our little office tryst.

That doesn’t mean I’ll turn her down for a repeat performance.

“Sorry, Ariana. I’ll have to pass.” Her hands leave my shoulders as I turn her down, and I’m sure it’s one of the first times she’s experienced rejection. People like her rarely ever hear the word “no” when it comes to sex. Or anything, for that matter.

She sits down next to me, and I notice her staring at me as I look at my phone. I may not be fucking her, but my reputation for treating women well is always at stake.

I turn off my phone and slip it into my pocket as I turn to Ariana, who’s staring quietly at me. “What’s wrong?” I ask.

“Who is she?” she asks, looking at the pocket I slid my phone into.

“The new intern I hired to expand Aspire’s ChitChat footprint. The world is moving away from magazines and billboards toward social media videos, and all the advertising firms are racing to get a foothold.”

She frowns and puts her hands in her lap. It’s impossible to miss her long legs that end in the little black dress. Most men would fantasize about having her legs in the air, but it only reminds me of the skirt Madison wore today.

“You don’t look at her like an intern, Emery. Who is she? Really.” Her Italian accent makes the question more intense. My minor in behavioral science at NYU helped me to understand how important those little things are, but they still catch me occasionally, and Ariana nearly got me.

I give her a showman’s smile, the kind I use at the office so often. It’s as fake as they come, but it feels natural at this point. “She’s just my intern, and I’m trying to understand how she’s done so well in the past. This race to become the king of ChitChat advertising has me scrambling to learn everything I can.”

She cocks her head and gives me a faint smile. It’s just as practiced as mine. “Emery, your secrets are safe with me, but why would you come here with me if all you want to do is go home with that intern?” Before I can interrupt, she holds up her hand. “Don’t try to lie to me. I’ve spent my life around men who wanted to take me home, and I can spot the look on anyone. Women in my position learn to be careful around men who look at them like that.”

Have I really become that transparent? “You know my reputation. It’s been too long since I’ve been out for a night.”

She nods, and the smile becomes real. “It’s good to know that even a man in your position can see a woman for more than her body.”

“You’re not upset?” I ask, more than a little surprised. What kind of woman is happy that their date wants someone else?

She chuckles and sits up a little straighter. “Everyone in the world looks at me, but not many care what I think or feel. It’s nice to know there are powerful men who want to get to know women, even if they don’t need to. Even a man with a reputation like yours.”
